I have a gear box leak; i have been told that it is the seal or it is the seal on the drive shaft; does anyone know who can fix it for me and how much will it cost.

Think I might have the same problem so i'm gonna take it to a mate who's a Subaru specialist (when I have the cash). Do you guys get an oily smell inside the car & slight amounts of smoke coming from the vent from oil burning off the manifold?

MAFFA

p.s. if you live anywhere near Horsham/Guildford I can direct you to his garage as it's slap bang between the two

Cheers Maffa - no I must admit that I have a slight seap of fluid rather than a proper leak. A guy has looked at it and told me its not that bad at the moment but something to look at in the not too distant future. No problems with smoking or smells.
Just need to know whether anyone knows whether there is a seal that needs replacing ??

Sorry chap, but if you think that "a slight seapage of tranny fluid coming from the Box area" clues us in to where this might be coming from, well, it doesn't. Yes, there are seals that can be replaced, but as things stand, the only person in a position to actually look at the thing and find out where the drips are actually coming from is... you!

There are plenty of places it could be coming from, provided you're certain it's gearbox oil. Front driveshaft seals, input shaft seal (and out the bottom of the bellhousing), Maincase halves/transfer case/extension case gaskets, check housing o-ring, reverse/neutral sensor washers, propshaft seal or drainplug washer to name but a few.

Rfowler (or should we call you Robbie? ) If the oil leak is from one of the front diff output stubs, the seal can be replaced without the need to take the 'box off the car, which is good news for the labour bill.

As for suggesting someone to do the job for you, it'd help if you told us whereabouts in the UK you are. If you are indeed Manchester City's number eight, Prosport in Stockport are probably pretty close to you...
