Default Burnt off by lesser cars - tips needed

Any tips on why I often get burnt off by far inferior cars? It is frustrating. These range from Golf GTIs to standard BMW 316s. I try not to slip the clutch on the start but if they are faster than me, does it mean that they do slip the clutch? I was beginning to wonder if it had anything to do with my lack of skills rather than the car. Perhaps I should PPP it.

Shouldn't be happening, even starting from 0 revs you should have the legs on a 316 or Golf Gti. Mind you having lived there I know how the nutcases drive around Paris and they don't hand around. My favourite was the dash round the arc de triumph down to Porte Maillot and the 15 lane roundabout wacky races.

If I want to get a quick/clutch kind start then I'll give it about 3K revs and feed in the clutch quickly but progressively.

Thanks for the tip. I will try. Yeah, I would love to have the arch de triumph all to myself. I like Porte de Pantin also. I am soon leaving Paris to go to Germany and unfortunately not to a curvy area.

I think those would-be racers are so set on racing it that they really must just burn the clutch (nice, but expensive, racey smell though).

Definatly should be quicker off the start than the golf or bmw - all four wheels pounding the floor makes for a great start.. . I had a nightmare the other day with a golf gti tried to cut me up! so drop the box and it flew - well now i have a massive dent in the back seat arm rest because i hit a bend and forget i was transporting a portable tv in the back seat - so until you have mastered the art of dropping the other cars pretend you have a portable tv in the back seat

All the best

just out of curiosity - can you really floor it? In normal driving I'll only ever press down a certain amount. Even when pushing I don't think I press the accelerator *that* far. don't know why, maybe psychological.

Hi Melina

I apologise on behalf of some of the English guys here, especially for imlach who doesn't seem to think before he types to a lady.

If these types of cars are buring you up, then either something is very wrong with your car, or you're just not used to driving quickly. Your car should be easily quicker than the cars you mention. If your car hasn't been serviced in a while, take it to a dealer & ask them to test drive the car with you in it. Get some feedback from the test driver to see if he thinks your car is ok. Once you've done that, then think about some advanced driver training. I don't know the options in France, but you could try to get some fast road training, or maybe some tuition on a race track. Just putting your foot to the floor if you don't feel confident is not a good idea. The idea is speed AND control.

Good luck on your move to Germany.

Regards
Nick

Thanks for all the responses here. From them, I gather that it is probably due to the fact that I don’t dare flooring it – a psychological thing as someone suggested.

It’s perhaps similar to emergency braking situations where research has shown that drivers only depress the brake only 30 percent hence “brake-assist” was invented.

But anyway when I have floored it, it has felt as if the car was flying which was a bit scary (I can just hear you guys laughing).

I have a “standard” Subaru 2003 STi (265 horses), 17,000 km on clock and recently serviced so the only variable here that isn’t constant is me! I will take up the advance driver course in Nuernburgring in Germany when I move to Germany.

Try clearing all those lipsticks, compacts, mobile phones and Tic-Tac boxes out of the footwell of your car. One of them's probably got stuck under the throttle pedal and is stopping you flooring it...

So, fed up with being left at the lights?
beaten by a lesser car?
YOU need no clutch gear changes

Sit at 5k rpm with clutch bite in 1st gear, when lights change, bring left foot up and push right foot down, when left foot at top, put on foot rest and leave it there!
Go into 2nd gear, right foot on fast pedal, hand on gear leaver, change gear (no clutch!), same with 3rd, 4th and 5th (you probably wont need 5th or 6th )
Simple fact is that you can change up gears without the use of the clutch, you need the clutch to go down gears though (this shouldnt damage the gearbox in any way as its designed to do this!).

Tony
PS, i got this info from an engineer who has built gearboxes for a very large car manufacturer, have also tried it and yes it does work

Surely you'll fry the clutch if you keep it biting??!

If the revs are that high and you just take your foot off, I dont think you'd get much tracktion either..!

Simple fact is that you can change up gears without the use of the clutch, you need the clutch to go down gears though (this shouldnt damage the gearbox in any way as its designed to do this!)
Really?
