Red face BMW 328 - how fast?!

Im convinced theres something not right with my car now, you guys expect a standard STI Type-R V5 to be able to keep up with a standard E36 BM 328?
Coming on to a dual carriage way i decided to give it a bit boot, This bm behind me started creeping up, heres me thinking its a M3 but no, I find myself reading his 328 badge... some one remind me why im paying £2k for insurance again..

BTW according to turbo gauge the car is producing 1.1 bar, tho i have a turbo timer that says 1.2.. <sigh>

Mate has a 328 sport and they are quick, it was neck and neck last time we played(Pretty standard My01).
I think that after 100 its a faster car than my scoob (aint no replacement for displacement), would have expected a type R to have fared batter though.
And yeh I would have wasted him on the twisties ( had to be done)

Would have thought a type R should be similar in performance, PPP bring it to about 280 bhp then?

I think it's about time to get your car to a Rolling Road mate.

Something not right there, a Type R should pull away from a 328 IMHO.

MY00 PPP = appx 250bhp with 280 you should be pulling away.

Nathan..

I'm not sure the boost you should be getting, but 1.1 bar is crap - more like MG Metro Turbo territory.

I had a go with an M3 E36 with my sti 5,and it was very close but overall I got ahead (there was some twisties involved).

Similar thing in an S2000 against a 328i and I was ahead for the first 4 gears (2 car lengths)then he crept past.

My scooby was quicker than the S2000 and the M3 is quicker than the 328.

So your STi R should have been able to kick the 328i in the a** hole.

Maybe he was coming up quicker than you thought, and you hit the gas later than you should have.

Please say you did...

bigdadal mate.

I have a R 5 as well and its geared very low, nothing can keep up when hard accelerating in 5th from 80 to 125

dont go over 125 as they tend to go bang

328 must have had a few mods instaled.

Nah, we were both leaving a roundabout straight on to a dual carriage way. was a pretty even start. Wasnt much between us till about 60 then he started slowly creeping away. i gave up about 90.. 2 blown engines has taught me to be gentle :-/

Maybe something isnt set up right.
Does your car feel any different from the previous engines?

If you have had 2 blown engines please tell me you found what was causing the fault?
Seriously, your car feels down on power and you have blown 2 engines sounds like you still have an underlying problem, could be way off but I would be getting it checked.

All these figures and times...

real world...

most fast cars, there's not realy that much in it... even a couple of seconds to 60 means only edging away on the road once your rolling...

my STi does the quarter in13.04 yet the other day a young lad ina Lupo GTI thing booted it from the lights... it was down hill and i was a little slow to react, yet it still took a while for me to reel it in...

just goes to show...

to realy monster somthing u need monster bhp...

saying that a tvr tuscan totally thrapped my sti down the slip road last week. quick car.

i had a 2000 328 ran it for 120k and it was a propper nice car... plenty quick enough... not as quicka as the sti but still pretty quick...

forgot to add..

figures

60 = 7 seconds dead thats for the new VVT engin i.e. v reg...>
max 149

managed it in the flat too... and with 18" 255's so quite a bit of drag...

After 60 his two wheel drive is saping a lot less energy than your 4wd. The reason that you need to include twisties is to get the benefit of 4wd. Once you get past about 5000 revs in second you are unlikely to get any gain from 4wd, and coming off a roudabout you would be unlikely to be in first, so your car had the advantage for maybe 0.5 seconds?

Try it with the same cars in a straight line from a standing start, or down a bumpy wet gravelly twistie road - will be a v v different story

Spooks, first problem i had was the big end going.. seemingly the usual for scoobs - keep that oil topped up :-/. Second time it went it'd snapped a conrod which then proceeded to add a new air vent to the engine block . I should of replaced all the conrods when the big end went the first time.

Anyway, still would have thought Id be able to keep a 200bhp bm behind me
