I quite liked 200SX's, right up until I saw that thread - why ? Do they really call them Hundy's ? WTF is a Hundy ?

I still like 200sx's, and Scoobies (got one) and MR2 Turbo's (got one) and and and and and.........

Can't be bothered with all this 'mines better than yours' crap, I likes what I likes, if others like that too then cool. If not, it's time for a pint

Mad K is part of the reason subaru drivers get such a bad press these days (imho) His questioning of johns knowledge is laughable at best!

200 hundred - two hundy - hundy , bit like the term "scooby" it's SUBARU,
or a 3 ft high doll on the parcelshelf, or the ultimate in tat - displayed in the gallery recently - a 2ft high scooby doo cartoon drawing on the rear window.

Unfortunately the thread on the 200SX site is now locked. I'm particularly disappointed, because I'm the Scooby owner in question, and 'Jolly F' is one of my suppliers. I'll email him a link to this thread...

In the meantime, to set a few things straight, and assuming I'm at least vaguely coherent whilst I continue to laugh out loud...
I've just been speaking to one of our customers about a test problem their having. Some how got into a conversation about cars...

'Somehow' actually means "By the way, I hear you have a Subaru...". (A colleague of Jolly's has a WRX and came to visit the office for a day a few weeks ago).
He said he was a main repesentative of the SIDC and photographer. I asked him to come to the next reading meet where alot of his club already attend.

Serious time for a moment: I claimed to be the semi-official photographer for True Grip, which is true - check the first few pages of the previous issue. Slight misunderstanding there... but nothing compared to what comes later!
He asked what car i had, so i told him. And his reply.....

...i was going to get one of them but it was too slow, i got the scooby instead....

Absolutely true - I test drove a standard late model 200SX - about 198bhp IIRC. And yes, it was OK when it got going but the turbo lag was awful. It didn't give me anything like the shove in the back that I got from a MY96 Impreza a week later, so I ended up buying a scooby.

You get the point!

Being a customer, and how tactful i am, i told him he was having a giraffe. Like for like the hundy takes the scooby appart from off the mark sometimes (driver dependant).
Hehe... not that tactful, then (This is starting to remind me a bit of the thread about the Mustang owner and the mechanic who posted about thrashing the nuts off it... )

BTW what's a 'Hundy'? Is it short for Hyundai? You have my sympathy

I said anytime he fancy's a go in a real car to let me know. He asked me why i was so confident, i told him about a few run ins with P1's etc and my spec
Jolly, if you're reading this: Actually you said you had 300bhp under your bonnet. Fair play to you, your car's probably quicker than mine. I have a UK-spec classic Impreza with PPP - so, about 245bhp. My next car will still be another scooby, though

I just can't believe the intial comment
Lighten up

Probably lost the account now, but at least i corrected the guy. Just don't tell the MD.
Hm... now, here's where it gets interesting... What's it worth?...

A mate of mine post their regularly. He's got a earlier hundy (S13 - lighter etc.) He's got it running at 260+ BHP and they are great cars. If you want, sideways at will/most of the time anyway, rear wheel drive fun then look no further. Cheap to buy now, cheap to mod and they can be turned into monsters.

I'd love one as a track only project car, but I don't think the UK with it's crap, narrow wet roads IS fun for RWD. (insert soxc pink smiley here)

That's why I bought a scooby Which goes in for it's first service Tuesday , then we'll see how it runs against my mates hundy.

I have joined the SXOC to reply, honestly but there is a certain degree of bad feeling which is a pity. Anyone else checked it out - the thread has been reopened and is at 11 pages!??!

Just read the entire thread. I've just stripped my project scoob back to standard and am looking for a cheap (sub 5k) replacement, much for the same reasons as John F, and 200SX is currently top of the list.

Just remind me not to go to any meets or join the club

If anyone ever starts using that stupid pink smiley over here I'll be lobbying SDB to get them banned!

Thumbs down

A lot of it (on similar powered cars) is down to the driver and launch technique. If one car bogs down and the other doesn't you're stuffed.

I've got to admit, I've seen such banter over on here so it's not isolated. Shame more people can't just get along and like each car for what it is.

I'd quite like a 200sx (s13), but never ventured to buy one and always ended up with something else. I bought my current car because I like it. Don't give a stuff what other people think. It's my money and I'll spend it on what I like

There is no right and wrong in such a discussion, just different opinions.

Hi all

Just popped over to apologise for the somewhat narrow minded comments on that thread and in particular the downright insulting ones. I think most will realise that those posts come from people that, I suspect, have had no experience of Imprezas at all and are merely going by heresay. And as always its the bad points that get circulated the most.

It does amaze me sometimes how superior a lot of 200SX owners get about their cars. Of course all of us in the club love our cars, including me, I'm the chairman of the club after all, but some seem completely oblivious to the down side of owning one. S13s (pop up headlights) are old now and are getting rusty and have high mileages so are prone to various mechanical failures, the engines have a bit of an issue with big end failure (something in common with Imprezzas) and the suspension bushes are made from jelly. S14s suffer from oilway clogging if not serviced properly and fuel pumps give up the ghost without warning. And of course both are somewhat tail happy and can bite you in the *** if not treated with some respect.

I repect the Imprezza for what it can do. Having driven my good mates (BigMikeyBoy) RB5 and P1 the amount of grip and stability on a bend was superb and the throttle response on the P1 was far superior to a 200SX. Not a big fan of the brakes though, surely I shouldnt have been able to get them to smoke after about 5 miles of hard driving?

It comes down to Horses for Courses. If you want massive grip and a decent amount of practicality then an Imprezza is for you. If you like to be able to kick the **** end out and want a 'sports coupe' then the 200 is the car to have.

Anyway, I digress. Those of you that read the thread on SXOC please dont take too much notice of the comments, shall we just say they were made by the 'uneducated'.

One comment though, i dont understand the amusement about the term 'Hundy'. Its no more odd than naming your car after a 1960s cartoon dog surely?

Cheers

Steve

I have just picked up a JDM WRX 94 from Dan Rolfe - absolute cracker btw Dan nice one.

I had an S13 (old style) 200sx last year for four months. No comparison for speed, grip and handling.

It was original when I picked it up @ 169bhp, I modded it to 210 and it felt reasonably quick then but nothing like this WRX feels like. Not surprised really as the WRX must have about 270-280bhp and probably weighs only about 50kgs more.

In the wet the 200s back-end had a mind of its own - it was a nightmare!!

I owned 2 200's (S13) before my MY00 scooby. The first one lasted about 2 months, before mysteriously disappearing during the night . That taught me a valuable lesson: never buy a car with only one set of keys and a non-functioning alarm from a back-street garage in Liverpool. Maybe I'm being cynical, but there were some suspicious circumstances.

The second lasted a bit longer before the engine let go in a big way on the M6. I spent ages (and lots of cash ) doing a full rebuild on it, only to get it (and very nearly me ) written off by some 17 yr old youfs who had "borrowed" their dad's car, while I was still running it in . Why let little things like a licence, of for that matter, insurance stop you eh lads? That taught me a second valuable lesson: a 200sx is quite good in a high speed head on collision. Although there's wasn't much left of it after that, especially after the fire brigade got me out

My mate has got a S14 200, which I think are cracking looking cars. Nearly got one, but then decided I was destined not to have a happy 200 ownership, so bought my scoob and never looked back

Good cars actually, excellent at getting the power down and specialise in long sweeping A-roads. Very cheap and easily tuneable. Real bang for buck bargain. Have/still do own on and love it. Would not compete with scoobys on the twisties so i hear (must admit have never driven a scooby).
The Nissan boys are a great crowd and will help you with questions etc and i always found them mature in their debate. I cant believe i missed this thread on SXOC!!!! (its now been closed). I also now use a FIAT coupe 20 valve turbo as my everyday ride.

There was a fair amount of debate on the FCC forum regarding scoobies not long ago (one of u r guys beat one of our guys at the pod etc which led to quite a heated debate). I suppose it just shows how passionate we are about cars. (all of us). I really must get to test drive an impreza one of these days and see what theyre all about.

Must be honest, so many seem to be grey imports it put me off, and the ones i really like (22b 2 door) were about 20K and a bit pricey for me). Ive got RWD & FWD, just need a 4WD to finish off my collection.

enjoy

They are not even good at it, let alone excellent. The early S13's didn't even have LSD and if you mod, even if you have the RLTC fitted, it won't sort it out if you plant your right foot.

Great car, as I said in my earlier post, but if you want to be able to plant that right foot you need 4WD.

Yes 4 wheels is better than 2 for sheer grip. I will rephrase my post here to "for a rear drive car it had what i felt was good grip". Better than others i had driven. I have never found the car tail happy, although the tail can be provoked and if you dont know what u r doing, can be dangerous in the wrong hands. Im only running about 210bhp, and obviously the more power you add, the more it would struggle.

Cartoon dog!!! tooshay ( now I know you dont spell it like that.)

I had a 1990 200sx and bloody loved it, the feel and driving position felt great, and in all honesty I would have one again but as well as my scoob.

Come on 200sx owners its all about freedom to choose and we shouldn't be getting at each other, most scoob owners are old 200sx'ers. We know they are good cars.

Mikey Boy, nice to see you finally beat my quarter mile time at TSC4. You've just got to beat the speed across the line now.
