Does this product work?
With the stupidly high price of CATS for the Impreza (£450 for the 1st CAT and £300 for the 2nd)!!!
There is a product out (liquid) called CATACLEAN here:-

Can't do a clicky, sorry!
Anyway, if its true it can reduce the emissions by a HUGE amount!!?? Could turn a MOT failure into a pass?! Without the cost of a CAT or 2?
Anyone any knowledge of it?

Just take your CATS off, replace with nice shiny stainless steel exhaust system, and keep them in the shed. That way they won't get knackered. You can simply refit one of them to get it through the MoT meaning it only gets used one day a year and it much less likely to suffer any damage.

Yeah, right - and I drop one of them on the floor and wipe it out!!
Also the Turbo gets shagged because of the lack of spooling back pressure!!
Good move?? Hmmmmmm doubt it!
Anyway - anyone tried this stuff??

Then it cleans the surface of the catalytic converter improving gas flow and reducing emissions
Of course if it cleaned the system as claimed then emissions would probably be reduced, but I doubt anywhere near that of a cat.
*Edit I'm condisering a TSL Thundercat - keeps emissions same as a normal cat but supposedly gives better flow and a 20BHP increase - best of both worlds..... Expensive though and seems only for MY01-MY03.

I'm interested because my MX5 CO emission will probably be out of MOT limits by about 0.2% come MOT time as it was on the limit last time.
A £15 bottle of gloop, if it really worked, is easier and cheaper than a new CAT .............. but, I don't want to line some conmans pockets if its just weasel wee!

Although in theory the turbo can run up to higher speeds without any back pressure, and in theory can spin to distruction, I would have thought that when fitted with a decat exhaust there would still be sufficient back pressure from the tubing, bends and back box to prevent the standard turbo from hurting itself.
As for the stuff.
One of the reasons CATS degrade over time is due to polution from things which attatch to the CAT and effectively reduce the surface area and hence reduce their effectiveness. I have not read about the stuff, butperhaps "they" have worked out a way to clean off some of the polutants (I think sulphur is a problem hence low sulphur fuels ?) by offering the polutant something more attractive than the platinum of th CAT to attached itself to ?
Just a thought (or two). . . .

So? A few sensible answers and some not - par for the course
I reckon it could work if it burnt-off some crud that had collected on the ceramic surface?
As for those who know diddly about turbo life being reduced due to the lack of the back pressure it was designed for ....... I can only assume you work in IT and not engineering as I do
Anyway - back to this CATACLEAN stuff ......................

Pete,why not try a bottle of good quality(catylst friendly) fuel injector cleaner.Give the engine a nice blast down the road and make sure it is at the correct running temperature before the 'cat test'.This should solve your problems unless you have a fuelling problem...

I happened to see the TV advert for this last week..
On the pretreated car they hooked it up to a CO meter etc and showed the readings "live" i.e. the figures where going up and down as you would expect.
Post treatment they showed the same display with the lowered figures - only this time the figures where shown freeze-frame i.e. no movement..
Very dodgy IMHO - why would they have to do that ???

Thanks for the replies - I have chucked a couple of bottles of injector cleaner through it ..... not had the test yet (just going on the past 3 years where it has gradually crept up) - so pr-empting the fail!
A blast and get them to test straight away mwy see it at the pass level
Any MOT mechie out there who would like to explain whether they test the emissions whatever the oil temp and as long as it passes then then theres no need to wait for a warmed through engine??

Pete...if your MX5 is K reg or newer then it will have to pass the BETS test first (basic emission test)which only involves a pipe up the exhaust and readings taken at a fast idle speed between 2500 and 3000 rpm.The computer program asks that the engine is running at normal running temperature for this test to be carried out.
If it FAILS then the next stage is a full CAT test which involves logging the car details and matching engine numbers,the oil temerature is then measured
using a probe down the dipstick tube.It will only allow the test to continue if the oil is above a certain level which is matched to the data for your vehicle.
Hope this is of some use to you.

Thanks Steve - useful info. so, basically, just because it just passed the BET test last year doesn't mean it would fail a FULL CAT test this year!?
I suppose the BET test is there to collect a pass if its easy to do - the FULL CAT test is for a questionable BET test? Makes sense!

Pete,the BETS test was brought in to save time in the MOT test.It was found that the majority of cat equipped cars that passed the cat test had readings that fell into a certain range.This was accepted for the pass critrea,however if a car failed then the full cat test was done using the car manufacturers stated limits as a pass/fail.
