Question Would you complain?

...if the Subaru mechanic that had just replaced a leaky seal in the rear diff, road tested the car afterwards and recorded 7136rpm and 78 miles an hour? That's what my S.E.C.S. unit had measured when I picked it up this afternoon. So I went in and complained.

I just didn't see that it was necessary, and he certainly shouldn't have been breaking any laws in MY car! The shift light/buzzer is set to 6500rpm for goodness sake, so he ignored that.

I'm not sure if I'm just being over-sensitive about it, but I don't know if I trust them enough to take the car back for anything again.

I never realised the S.E.C.S. unit was such a big brother toy!

I'd produce the evidence and demand an apology and compensation!

I'm not really sure what I'd gain by taking it any further... I'm not sure they could provide any sort of compensation, and i'm not even sure what I'd be looking for? The guy (service manager I think) I spoke to said it would go on the mechanics record, and was quite apologetic

Yeah, it's quite handy for that... I reset it everytime I hand it over to someone else for anything. There's Sat Nav in there as well which can record the route taken by the car wherever it goes, and with the screen folded away, you'd never know it was doing it. Forgot to set that this time though.

Sorry to highjack your thread.

I didnt realise that these SECS things did this.

Rob O'Neill lent me his car with one of these fitted.

If your reading Rob, did you monitor my drive, just interested as I dont usually blast other peoples cars.

Or did I ?

EX-PUG.... I would return to the garage and ask them whats going on, whilst your there take out their demonstator STI8, and take revenge.

other thing i'd be concerned about is the mechanic getting straight on the road with your poor cold turbo and flogging the living **** out of it before it has warmed up

Question

Sorry to be really thick guys but what is a SECS unit? Are they standard? and how do you check them?

Apart from going to a different dealer I don't think you can do any more than you have already, you can be sure it won't go unmentioned to the mechanic in question. If you stay with them you can ask specifically that the same mechanic doesn't work on your car.

I would have thought any dealer with a concern about their reputation would have been more than quite apologetic though.

It's an ECU monitor, sits on top of the dashboard (or in a DIN slot) and supplies various bits of info from the ECU. www.psi3.co.uk for info.

In fact, while I'm at it...

Cheers Pug!

With regards to your problem, i'm not too sure what else you can do. it all depends on whether you feel comfortable going back to that dealer or not!

if the answer to that is no, then go somewhere else. if thats not practical then have another word with the manager, try and be reasonable, explain your concerns and that you want to continue giving them your business, and see what he says, if he really wants your business you should be able to tell, if he's ambivelant tell him to go f**k himself and then write a letter of complaint to subaru and then come back here and name and shame!!

good luck.

Same thing happened to my brothers car when it went in with a SECS. The dealer didnt know about it and put the car way above the beeper. When he quizzed them about the readings (as it will store the peaks even if the power is removed) was given a reply along the lines: There was something beeping all the time so it was unplugged. Shame the SECS doesnt beep unless there is a major alert (overboost etc) and it was probably the grear shift beeper.

Yeah the dealer I use now unplugs mine and leaves it for me to plug back in when I get the car back...

There is no way a mechanic should be using those revs/speed to be checking for anything. The engine noise alone would drown out any investigative listening...

Ask them if they tell all their other customer when they drop their keys off that their cars are going to be red lined when you walk out the door?

Makes my blood boil

What about the chance that he could have been caught speeding in my car? There aren't any roads in the vacinity that would have allowed him to get above 60 legally. I don't see why I should have to be put through the aggravation of having to prove it wasn't me driving. Do you?

Unhappy

Had exactly the same thing happen to mine at the last service at a main dealer except mine said 7krpm and 101mph!!!!!!!
Went and had a word with the sertvice manager and basically got told i was a liar or my equipment was faulty as there was no possible way they could have done that speed on the road test route they took.
There is a dual carridge way less than a mile from the dealership and there was 7 extra miles on the clock.
Would like to say i will not use them again but the nearest dealer appart from them is over an hours drive away. Had been very happy with their service up until that point.

Mine went flying past while I was in the showroom - and that was straight out of the garage! I was not a happy bunny & I told them if anything went wrong with the car due to their lack of care and attention I would be taking it further. I asked them how they would have felt in my position and they could not even look at me let alone answer me

Both outrageous! Did either of you report the incident in writing to anyone, or take it any further?

I've never trusted dealers as far as I can throw them.

Fotunatley I can do all my own work (where possible).
If your not in need of dealer stamps, find yourself a decent mechanic that you know, or a reputable specialist.
Then make your own S/H for the car.

Last peice of mech work was the c/belt (no time), at a specialist. Car went in, belt changed, then park up outside. No mileage in cured
How it should be.

With the Big Brotherness of S.E.C.S and Defi, I'd of torn both the manger & fitter off a strip.
How can they argue aginst real time data.

Same thing hapened to me after a service.

Response from Subaru was:

As regards the road test that your vehicle was subject to, I would still defend the fact that the car has to be tested throughout the rev range to verify performance of the components changed, for example, a spark plug may function perfectly at idle and fail under load at high revs. I have verified with.................at Subaru Technical that this forms part of the recommeded procedure during routine servicing.
Defis showed, 1.45 peak boost which it only hits in 5th at high speed/revs

Bar Stewards.

too right I'd complain and I did once. the speed registered on my turbo timer as 156km/h when my car wasn't even run! I didn't want to get the guy fired but this was really taking the biscuit in a brand new car. I think he'll be more cautious next time he wants to go fast in anyones car the cheeky git!

the subaru service manager offered me a free service and I took the offer without further action from my side.

Ex pug,

They have already done that in your car, so no complaining is gonna change that. Can imagine how you feel, its your pride and joy and you clearly set your limit at around 6500 rpm.

My advice would be not to use the garage again and try and find somewhere that you can trust more.

As for the car, it will be fine, and i bet its all under warranty anyway
I have a boost controller fitted to my car and turn it to off (standard boost) whenever anyone does anywork. Why should my hard earned be used for their pleasure. I give them 260bhp, not 320

The last time I gave someone else the keys to my MY03 STi, it came back with the SECS displaying the following:

However, I wasn't that unhappy at all....
