On the classic shape car it was always fitted after the car was built anyway. When I bought my car it was £995, whether fitted before delivery or after.
Bad idea? Definitely not. The effect on the car is that it gets cold at the push of a button

Agree with Andy's comments, i remember sitting at a dealers waiting for my car as the engineer turned up to fit a/c to two cars just sold in the showroom. They fitted Subaru a/c kits to the cars, not suprising as i am sure a non gen would void a warranty.
As for is it worth it, yes without doubt, i hardly noticed any difference fuel economy wise and it is great in the summer keep cool and for demisting windows oin bad weather.
When looking for a car i would only buy one with a/c or if i had the chance of two with near identical specs and one had a/c i would buy the a/c car.
Might make an exception for something really, really special.
I think people expect it these days.

I got it fitted to my MY00 classic last year,
As above, £995
Car gets cold in summer,
One more button on the dash to play with in traffic jams.
Pretty straightforward, except Coolair (national supplier) ran out of fans at the height of summer and I only got one fitted upon installation, had to wait a few months to get the second fitted.

Had it on mine since I bought it - 98 UK turbo.
Wouldn't be without it and never switch it off (though I do sometimes turn the temp up), cos the de-humidification part keeps the screen from misting....
