Power Upgrades

Power Upgrades
I am considering some sort of power upgrade to my std 01 wrx (warranty expired). I know about the oficial PPP one but my car is import from Holland so dealers usually not falling over themselves to be friendly.
That aside it does seem quite expensive anyway and is it true you have to run on 97ron fuel to get the best out of it.
I have seens lots of others avertised in various magazines and was wondering if anyone else had non subaru upgrades carried out and how good or bad they were.
Live in the south east so have seen one at Power Engineering £1,100 for 255bhp & 250Lbsft. Anybody out there have that one.
Also saw add for superchips offering extra 40bhp for £511.
These seems good value for money but just wondering what the downsides were.
Thanks
KOB

What have you done to the car so far mate?
A good de-cat or sports Cat exhaust will give you around 20BHP for starters, then its re-map time I should think from Power Ebgineering or some such place.

Thanks for that. Car is unmodified at the moment. Was waiting for warranty to expire and to get some milage on the clock.
Are there any bad affect these various upgrades can have. I have heard horror story of engine blow ups etc

Hi KOB,
I have an MY03 WRX (EU import). I bought a second-hand prodrive backbox for £180, got a de-cat centre for £90 (scoobyworld) and then Power Eng did an Ecutek upgrade for £525 (group buy).
I now have 263bhp & 259lbs/ft which is a little more than the PPP for a total of about £800. Engine blow ups are usually due to badly implemented or over-optimistic upgrades. The guys at PE stay well on the side of caution with their tuning and I'd recommend them to anyone.

Hi mate
Mine is a MY00 also from Holland but a full uk spec. As the posts above I would recommend the exhaust first, possibly back and centre section. After I had mine done it seemed a little more responsive.
In the new year I had the remap (tek2) and the downpipe replaced by PE. After the rolling road test it produced 280 bhp with a very flat 255 torque curve. It is a totally different beast from the 220-225 bhp with just the exhaust. I would strongly suggest that if you do the exhaust ensure you keep all the original parts.
As an aside you may want to consider the brakes at some point, I found nothing to extreme was needed.
Good luck

Thanks for that, I will start raiding the piggy bank
John P, do you wht the difference is between a car from Holland and a UK one. The only difference I was aware of was the warranty and the fact that it had cat 1 alarm immobiliser which I had fitted later. Are there other diffs.
Thanks
