Default How cheeky is this.......

My STI 8 is advertised on eBay and I got an email "Question for seller" as follows....

Hello mate - I just need a favor if you would be so kind.

I need a chassis number and applied model number from a 3002 Type UK STi to order a few parts. Would you mind looking on your VIN plate and sending me these numbers. They are NOT the VIN number - the chassis number is on top, and the applied number should be marked (both should start with a GD).

Thank you very much!!

How much of a cheek is that?

Like I'll broadcast my chassis number to all and sundry.

If anyone wants my chassis number, it'll cost you £23,000, and included in the price, I'll throw in a 10 month old STI 8 PPP with 19" wheels and Prodrive suspension!

What are your thoughts?

Innocent cheek?

or possible ringing scam?

Tell him you'll need his credit card details 'to ensure there not the same as mine'.

Cheeky fvck.

Maybe he just wants to run a full HPI check, in which case I believe you need the VIN. If he does though, can't see why he failed to tell you this

...and, if you have indeed got a 3002 model, does it look all futuristic and go like stink? What's the world like in the future? Any clues?

Maybe he just wants to run a full HPI check
Then why state that he wants the chassis number to order STI parts?

Needless to say, no **** will be getting my chassis/engine numbers unless they are a bona-fide purchaser wishing to HPI!

Sorry, just re-read your post and I completely misunderstood it
I initially read it as him wanting to buy it, and then requesting the numbers possibly for HPI check.

Didn't see the initial bit where he was asking a favour.

In that case, like you said, tell him it will cost him 23k! Cheeky sod.

Anyway, it's a bloody bargain.....

Not many 3002 models around for £23k, believe me!

Just a thought - he could have e.g. a WRX and want to buy e.g. an STi intercooler, and need a number to get that part via Subaru?

Admittedly it seems dodgy, and I don't blame you for not giving the number out (I wouldn't either), but he might not have dodgy motives. Far too easy to judge people on here without knowing the facts.

Exactly what I thought. I have a WRX and would like the front corner splitters for my bumper and maybe the side skirts.... and I need that sort of info to fool Subaru (I think anyway... haven't tried the honest approach yet).

I am not saying you should give him those details, but I think we are too quick to judge people as being dodgy.

I agree that it may well be an innocent case of a WRX owner wanting an STi spoiler, or STi bonnet scoop for example, but I am not willing to take the chance I'm afraid.

If the person wants the parts so badly then all he has to do is go into the showroom prior to the parts dept and note the numbers from a new model or demonstrator......

It's doesn't sound to me like he wants your VIN number, he wants your applied model code which for example would be GC8A48D for my car which just means it's a MY93 WRX 4 door saloon with a manual gearbox. It doesn't uniquely identify the car.

No, he actually wants the chassis number and the applied model code. I don't know how it works for Subarus, but for the wife's Pug 206CC the VIN is actually [applied model code]+[chassis number]

PS: that's "+" as in string concatenation, you don't actually have to add the two numbers up
