Is it Possible that the car settles slightly at the rear after stopping and immediately applying the handbrake. i.e. The rear of the car is slightly higher due to the braking.

I can't 100% explain the clonk and settle but it could be either the handbrake giving and/or re-gripping. If not, then maybe the rear suspension could do with a once over.
