How to check if all import duties have been paid?

The current owner wouldn’t have been able to register the vehicle without paying the VAT first.
So if the vehicle is registered its a safe bet the VAT has been paid.
The current owner should also have kept his VAT receipt this will be stamped will paid in big red letter.
You have to keep this for five years and pass it on to any new owners.
Hope this helps

By the way I got caught speed the other day and northwales police have issued me with a warning. Totally of subject but I just had to tell someone.

Hi mate, thanks or the reply and congrats on the narrow escape I've only ever been to Wales once and game away with 3 points!
The situation is a bit more complicated than normal. The owner is Japanese. He bought the car to Britain a while ago as a personal import. As it was his own car, there was no tax to pay apparently. He's now taken the car to France, and he used a V561 (certificate of permanent export). So I guess now, I now need to re-import and SVA it, but there's no tax to pay?

http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/exptimpt.htm#Exports If this site does not clear it up for you I would say to contact DVLA local office Reading on 0870] 241 5161 and ask to speak to someone in the imports section.
