Right,

I new to this kind of thing,m so don't take the ****. I wanna buy a Scooby, but are they all imports? If there was an official UK Spec car, when did it start appearing?

I've got about ten grand and don't want anything that someone's torn apart and put back together themselves (I wanna do that bit...), so what's a good one to get?

Can I buy a Jap one and run it on 95ron fuel, or will it pink (like my 205 1.9 GTi did).

So many questions, but this seems to be the right place to ask!

Nope - I expect most are UK's to be honest although plenty of Jap and European imports about as well as the odd one or 2 from Aus and the US. Check out the scooby FAQ - can't remember the URL, but use the search.

Should be able to get a nice one for that, my X reg 2000 UK spec wagon was just shy of £13K in dec, so you are looking at a bit older but shouldn't be a problem, have a look at the approved cars on the subaru web site or the for sale section on here. In standard form the Jap spec cars tend to have about 40bhp more or so for the equivalent model, but there are other issues, horses for courses, depends what is most important to you.

Think most people run on optimax as a minimum for Jap cars and many use octane booster as well. All depends on if the car is standard and the ECU map.
