Still haven't had a definate answer.Yes or No.
Come on someone knows for sure.
Anyone really know their Subaru's
I don't think I want the problems that come with an import.
Are there that many problems! Who knows?

The main (and one of the few) downsides to the import is the increased insurance - it could be as much as a few hundred pounds a year more and many companies don't want to touch them which is unfair in my opinion. Apart from that I wouldn't let anything put you off. They have more power and better equipment levels than the UK car as standard (climate control, folding mirrors, rear wipers etc) and parts and servicing are no problem these days with so many specialists araound. I had a Japanese 1998 WRX for over 3 years and had no problems at all.

Tiger- Do a search on here about fuel types and such like and you'll find owning a Jap import is no big deal.
They will invariably be in far better condition/spec and lower miles too, not to mention quicker.
Only real downside as Snacks has said is the insurance hike.

Just out of curiosity...does anyone know the performance figures of a WRX Turbo Auto? And how it drives compared to the manual
It's just a little theory I have after driving a few Bentley Continental T's (old shape HUGE turbo) - auto of course. And the thing I notice was that you got no lag between gearchanges 'cos your foot is firmly planted in the lambswool rugs which I found fantastic
Just wondered if you got the same with the Scoob Turbo Auto's?

yep, do a search on the trader, loads of autos about, bugeyes aswell. Only import comes as an auto. How's an auto slower ? You don't loose anytime between changes, none of that timewasting clutch rubbish !!!

What about fuel types.
And engines going pop.
Is it worth the hassle.
I think i will have to go for a UK car.Much safer in the long run.Don't think an import is worth the hassle after reading different posts about fuel additives etc.
Manual box should be ok,just lazy and easer in town with an auto box.

If it's a 4 speeder I would expect it to be quite a bit slower, the latest 5 speed auto's are a little slower on paper but not much in the real world. The current 6 and 7 speeders are excellent. Merc have said the 7 speed box in the V8 S Class has greater performance than any manual they could make due to the way the electronic torque converter can put the power down and use the 7 ratio's. Wouldn't have thought that would be the case in smaller cars though.

Yeah in general most auto car's are slower than their manual counter parts due to extra weight and the power sucked up the the torque converter.
But my real question is with Scooby TURBO's only. What makes me wonder is this: Normal manual turbo, you change gear, back off the throttle a little (unless your like to do full throttle changes ) And in doing so you loose a few psi of boost, and the revs drop. So when you acelerate in the next gear you have the lag as the turbo spools back to full boost.
Now, if it were an auto. As I found with Bentley Turbo's (auto), You plant the throttle, turbo kicks in....and STAYS on Boost through all the gears until you have to back off (2.5tons and corners don't mix to well )
Now what I'm wondering is do you have the same effect with scooby autos?
OK it'll still have lag when you intially floor it, and you have the 'box faffing about on what to do. But in a straight line drag it would be interesting to see the real-life difference.

Tiger1,
With regards to fuel then you'll probably get some mixed advice and it does depend on the model and year and how hard it's driven. I had a MY98 WRX (non STI)for over 3 years and ran it on Super Unleaded or Optimax without octane booster and never had any engine problems. I only ever added octane booster once or twice to see if it made a difference and didn't really notice any. Some people will tell you that you must add octane booster to Super Unleaded and it may well be true that later STI's are more demanding of higher octane fuel than my car. Another option to consider would be an ECU remap for UK Super Unleaded which should increases drivability, torque, power and fuel economy (these improvements also apply to UK cars).
