yep, the M3 is quicker, my neighbours got one and its a ******* animal!
still, he can't drive for **** and i ain't the best driver in the world by a long way and he can't keep up with me, even in the dry
ok, he's got air con and a soft top and i've got a rattly hot cabin but i love it!

If you're brutal with the clutch, around 5 seconds in the WRX is achievable.
Use launch control on an SMG M3 and you'll get 4.8 seconds according to a quick google.
Face it, a 6-8 grand car 5 year old car is going to have trouble against a 40 grand new car, but it will still give it an embarassing run for its money considering it's less than a fifth of the price !
New turbo, intercooler, injectors and ECU and you'll be worrying them (until your gearbox falls apart)

I went up against one im my WRX STi Type RA end of last year.
very late night damp conditions just outside newquay, he pulled in behind me at a junction and started to harrass my ***, so i dropped it into second, floored it I immediately opened up about 3 or 4 car lengths, and by the time we reached the next round about after quite a twisty road i'd say he was about 4-5 seconds behind me. Not so sure if i'd have been able to outrun him in a straight line in the dry, but i think my lower ratios on the box would still have him looking at my tail lights.

98 wrx should beat 5 seconds if you hammer the clutch
my best time with a near standerd 97 wrx was 4.5 seconds, timed with gps equipment, not sure how relistic this is, but it was a proper 0-60 timed event

I've often watched this debate before but never posted. My old man does have a M3,although we've never really gone up against each other i know there ain't much in it.The scoob is not standard though and if it were then i'd get blitzed.I did have a tangle with a another new M3 not so long ago and found it strugling around the corners but once on the straight there was nothing in it.You just don't know how much is down to the driver?

In the Evo mag tests, the 0-100mph straight line tests were very similar between the M3 and an STi (and Evo). The 4WD cars were quicker 0-60, but the BMW bridged the gap 60-100. A standard classic would run out of steam after 60 compared with the BMW; the new WRX is also slightly slower than the classic. A standard BMW M3 will not do a 10s 0-100; the only M3 to get close to that will be the CSL variant, then the M3 roadster. Standard M3 are regularly stated at ~13, standard STi about 13.5 and standard WRXs ~15+ (give or take a bit ).
IMHO, a lightly modded STi (ff exhaust) ~= standard M3 in 0-100.
IIRC

All very good if he actually owned a M3.
If he rates them that highly, I'm sure your dad would buy you one.
Personnally I think a new Lamborghini is nicer than my STi, but the fact is, I haven't got one, will probably never be able to afford one, so who cares at all the hyperthetical comparisons.
The fact is YOU have a Scooby your dad hasn't got a M3.
Your Scooby will always be faster than a dream!!

Hi Peachy,
I used to own a 98 wrx ;-) (take at look at your other post...) and now own a E36 M3 EVO which is not quite as quick as the new one but still good for comparison. For my M3 the 0-60 is close but not quite as quick as the scooby because of the traction disadvantage mainly in first gear. From there onwards though the M3 is definitely quicker in a straight line and even more so for the E46 (new one).
Basically the faster you are going the greater the advantage for the M3 because of the extra power and the fact that only 2 wheels are being driven. The M3 has more outright grip because of wider tyres but the WRX rides the bumps better and is more chuckable and much easier to control in the wet being less likely to swap ends while accelerating out (or around) a corner. Horses for courses.

You need a serious amount more BHP than another car to really punish them.
I dont care what standard scoob you're in, it wont keep up with an M3 Its probably got 300bhp at the wheels, at a guess, where as even a new STi would only have 200 ish with the loss through the drivetrain.
Therefore, IMHO, you need some basic mods to keep up, and some damn tasty ones to actuall do one in a straight line. But where's the fun in that

i got a new WRX on my way to work i had a m3 sitting on the rear end of my car so i slowed into the left lane let him past, pulled back out and showed him what a scooby could do, (i was all over him) dont think he liked it as he pulled into the left lane and let me passed lol
