I have seen an STI 5 with a different bonnet vent on the right hand side that it would seem would be used to vent cool air into the engine bay rather than venting hot air out. Would this be used to feed air to an induction kit?

Ive got a pannel filter going in my V-limited but my mate has a WRX and put an HKS induction kit in his and said it made a massive difference. Ive heard that induction filters simply get too hot because of where they are and a pannel filter would be better. Anyway i took the advice but just wondered what everyone else does?

Cheers

A good panel filter is the best all-round option. There is very little to be gained from an induction kit unless you're running a heavily modified engine, and, as you say, there can also be losses if it ends up drawing in warm air. This can be minimised by the use of the mini-scoop as you've seen, as well as constructing a cold air box under the bonnet.

If your mate found a "massive" difference when going from the standard induction tract to the induction kit, then there was either something wrong with his car before, or there is now.

Some cone filters can cause the airflow meter to misread and thus make the car run lean under boost. This paradoxically gives better performance, but it can also result in raised cylinder temperatures, detonation and eventually damage if it isn't corrected. If I was in his shoes, I'd fit a good AFR meter as soon as possible and make certain the mixtures are where they should be.
