Is that left of the battery, right of the alternator ?
If it is then the beach is the most likley suspect
or a sandy / gritted road youv'e been down @ 60 mph
Usually its just a build up of road debris over say 30 - 40 k miles.
What milage has the car done ?

If it's a Jap import then shouldn't worry. Mine had sand in the engine bay - and it's a GTO, so the driver wouldn't have been rallying in it!!!
