Im looking at upgrading from my UK to an STi, quite likely to be a version V.

So far ive got my eyes on two, both four doors - one in japan & one here on SN (the latter with the required modifications/alterations for the UK already done), both for £11.5k

My questions are:

1. Whats the spec differences between a four door V5 & a Type R. Does a 4 door have DCCD, IC spray, ABS etc etc
2. Advantages/disadvanatges over a 4 door & Type R (without being biased to either one)
3. Whats the price differences between a 4 & 2 door
4. Whats the max price i should pay for either
5. Running Tips

cheers
chris

Chris, the Type R is a two door variant with a diff control, less sound deadening, no ABS and intercooler mist spray.

The best place you could look is probably the SIDC site and look for the model history http://www.sidc.co.uk/faq.htm

I have a Type R and prefer it to the 4 door.

If you've got kids get the 4 door STi5 !!
Mines got ABS but no I/C waterspray (but will have shortly!) and got pretty much everything else.
Run it on S/UL (+ octane booster for that bit extra).
Not much difference in performance although Type R owners will probably say otherwise!! (That should get them going!! lol )
Above all m8 - either way, you'll enjoy the difference (unless your name is Scott and you drive the quickest UK spec car I know!!).

You could of course buy an STi5 TypeRA limited.

That is a 4 door but has the electronic centre diff, bigger rear diff, better spec LSD's, 13:1 quickrack, bigger brakes......... It's quite an extensive list.

The TypeR/RA is a quicker car than a normal STi5, it handles much better too because of the DCCD torque split giving a 65:35 rear wheel drive biased chasis. The centre/front/rear LSD's give much higher traction levels too.

Price depends on the specification of the car, one that has all the sensible mods on will cost you more than a standard spec car of the equivilent condition, just as you would expect with any car.

Running tips on a V5,

Change the MAF straight away, fit an AFR, knocklink and boost gauge. Run on Optimax and booster, or get a tek 2.5

The V5 seems to be much more prone to blow ups IMHO, but reckoned to be a real monster, even standard. I wouldnt have bought one uless I knew the previous owner too. So many people still run them on 95 and up the boost

Main thing I found switching to JDM is the difficuly of finding a place to service it, and making sure you dont run of booster.
