hi ,

want to uprate the brakes and wondering what's best to replace, are the calipers ok and it's the dics/pads that let it down or is the whole set up a bit crap? (i've got 4 pots on a MY99 by the way)
godspeed dics sound tempting, but are they any good?
haven't got a fortune to spend so can't go mental and just go and buy an AP package and the brakes are ok at the moment, but i'm getting the PE remap on monday and a bit worried the brakes won't be up to the extra power?
or am i just worrying about nothing?
is the 4 pot set up on an sti the same as my uk by the way(the pads/dics i mean)? if they can stop a 280 bhp scoob they shouldn't struggle with mine should they?

any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, cheers

Wink

STi's of the classic nature normally had 2 pot rear brakes, the uk cars didnt.
They are rather pathetic brakes, the calipers are suppose to be ok, its the pads and discs.
The cheapest way would be to go for uprated discs and pads, then braided brake lines to give you more feel.

I bought discs from Godspeed as part of the recent group buy. Changed pads to M1144's (also from Ian) and it has made a significant difference. Next thing is to change the hoses to stainless and change the fluid.

Back brakes do very little work so don't get carried away with them.

Get a support bracket for the firewall that the brake master cylinder is attached to. It reduces the flex and improves the feel of the braking. Cheap mod to carry out.

cheers guys, got the braided lines and uprated fluid in already and well happy with the pedal feel, just want a bit more bite.
was wondering if the import 4 pot set up was any different to the uk 4 pot in any way? maybe different pads and dics?
does just uprating the front brakes alter the braking balance at all?

Im not quite a brake expert but i think thats where you have bleed valves to set up the pressures the brakes work at?
Your braking bias is something like 70/30 f/r, getting bigger brakes wont affect this, what it will do is give you better bite and better heat dispersion (depending on the disc type etc).

just had a look on the godspeed web site, i remember seeing these discs on a P1 about a year ago now. they look bloody massive!!
are there any other brake alternatives out there for this sort of money that work well?

Second hand set of AP 4 pots IMHO.

I spent more money messing about with pads and discs and didn't listen to the above advice early enough.

A set of AP 4 pots over uprated stuff using the original calipers, is worth over 50 BHP extra in a lot of driving situations IMHO.

You won't regret the price of the APs when you see how they work, but when you crack aftermarket discs you will curse them.

I agree with John. Second hand AP4s are the way to go. I did this on my last Scoob and never regretted it. Got back basically what I paid for the brakes too.....
