Impreza P1 or Audi TT Coupe (225)
#1
Hi All,
I'm have a bit of a dilemma, a pleasant one, but a dilemma all the same.
I am currently the proud owner of an Impreza Turbo Catalunya, which I've had for nearly three years. Prior to that, I had a metallic green N-reg Impreza Turbo.
It's now time for me to choose my new company car, and I currently have an Audi TT Coupe (225) on order. I originally wanted a P1, but was told that there were none left when I tried to place an order.
My local dealer now tells me that he has a P1 available, and was wondering if I would like the car.
I really like the TT, and I am inclined towards trying something other than an Impreza, but the P1 is oh so tempting.
Is it really so much better than my current car that I will be happy with it for the next three years?
I'd appreciate hearing peoples opinions.
Bagpuss.

I promise I'm not trying to make people jealous!
Both my wife and I really wanted the P1, and we were really pi**ed off not to be able to get one.
It then took me weeks to find another car that we could both be happy with. We finally settled on the TT.
I need to be damn sure that the P1 is the right car for me before I go to all the hassle of cancelling the TT (not going to please my company fleet department, or the Audi dealer).
Not to mention the fact that the TT is already built and in the country, whereas the Subaru dealer doesn't actually have the P1 yet.
An additional thing to consider is the emissions of the P1. They are much worse than the TT, which means the tax man will be shafting me senseless when the new company car tax changes happen in 2002.
As I can't get a test drive in a P1, I just wanted to ask if people think it's worth taking the risk and going for it.

Ive owned an S3 tuned to 265bhp. Its the same as the TT without the looks, but handles better.
Email me and I'll share my views on both, without boring the list. Ive got a P1 you can sit in !!
If you like your performance, the TT in std form is going to feel like a tractor after the Cat. Will your fleet manager let you tune it ?

I have driven an S4 (and am awaiting for my P1) and if the TT is anything like the S4 get the P1.
The only audi Ithink that will compete unless you tune will be the RS4, but only 300 or so available...

Not sure if this is important to you but:
Have you looked at the TT boot, no room for anything?
Rear seats in TT can't fit an adult, probably only a small child with thin legs!
Still the TT looks nicer than the P1 IMHO, but they are vastly different cars.

Would that be the Audi TT that is in the news recently for causing deaths due to bad aerodynamic design, as cars spin with lift-off oversteer at the earliest opportunity ?
TT is a nice excercise in trendy design, but not a drivers car.
Depends on whether you want a fast/safe car or a pose-mobile.

Know someone who bought a TT after an Escort Cossie. Tried to do the same in the TT that he did in the Cossie, and nearly, in his words, splattered himself all over the road. He's sold it now. They go fairly well, don't handle too badly, are beautifully built and look like an upside down bath.
A TT wouldn't see which way a std turbo has gone, let alone a P1STi!

There is no choice!
I had to get rid of my Sti V in December, and followed it up by taking delivery of 328Ci. After one month I was so bored I decided to pass it on to someone else and then got a TT (225BHP).
My wife loves the TT, but for me there is absolutely no comparison between the two cars. I know some people will argue, but effectively a P1 is an Sti V, and given the choice between Sti V and TT it would take me less than a millisecond to decide. Sti V!!!!!
The one thing I feel I must state though is that Impreza drivers are very similar to BMW drivers. They turn the other way when the see a TT and seem never to acknowledge the car.
I, personally, still put my thumbs up to scooby drivers and they arrogantly look away. Even when driving my scooby I used to acknowledge EVO drivers.
GO FOR THE P1, there is no choice.. believe me!

interesting one bagpuss.
i have a tweaked, key-coded prodrive my97 with scoobysport backbox. my brother has just got his TT quattro which he bought as a right hooker from a dealer in frankfurt for 24K (six month wait).
we swapped cars to compare notes as brothers do on many things. i thought:
- impreza more lithe, better communication (less "germanically neutral" if you know what i mean), faster pick-up in all gears, better soundtrack, roomy, practical, turns heads
- TT more solid but slower (but also totally relentless), less communication & feel, superior build & smashing looks inside and out, no room inside, *always* turns heads.
he thought the scoob was very exciting but brash. he prefers the subtlety, styling and suave poke of the TT.
the p1: even better performance etc etc.
what does that say? don't know really, it's so subjective. but he's five years older than me and a suit with two children. horses for courses: they are both superb cars. toss a coin. i'm sure you won't be disappointed. they're both rare, desirable birds.

Just to add to Jonathans thoughts.
I own a Japanese P1 and have driven an S3 and an Audi TT (as well as a number of UK Scoobs).
For the the S3 was the more interesting Audi and it would not have distracted from my Scoob for more than a millisecond.
Also the UK Scoobs would put both cars to shame.
Bottom line, Audi TT is a Golf GTi Turbo in a nice dress - it really is that simple.
In fact you could get a Golf GTi Turbo and chip it to 225bhp and off you go - for about £15k less.
P1 - it's the only way to go
R
PS I nearly got a P1 on my company car scheme, but I would have had to chip in just too much ackers everymonth. I got a cheaper car (in monthly lease terms) and spend the difference on my Japanese P1 instead!

I really appreciate the feedback that everyone has given me here. It's nice to see that you can get balanced opinions from what could have been a biased forum.
It really comes down to whether I want the pose factor of the TT, or the driving pleasure of the P1. Given the enjoyment that my current Impreza has provided, I think it will just have to be the P1.
All I've got to do now is wait until delivery on the 1st of September
Once again, thanks to all for sharing your opinions.

Audi TT Vs. P1?????
you must be mistaken, I would take a UK Impreza Turbo over the Audi, it is faster, handles better, looks the buisness unlike the hairdressers Audi.
if you still want to compare the P1 to the TT then only styling wise,
Just think:
0-60 4.6 sec!!!

Bagpuss,
I have to say first, great show. Second, pose factor alone, the P1 is the more impressive car and far rarer than any TTs.
The TT ios unfortunately going the same way as the SLK, it is becomming a hairdressers car.
The back seat has warnings that rear passenegers should not be over 4ft 10.
Have to say, we had one on order. I used to think the car was gorgeous but it grew off me. The press complaints and fatalities just put me off further. I disagree with above problems being blown out of proportion. There were a disproportiionate number of deaths from what should have been a stable car, and comparing it with unreported 911 related deaths is just chalk and cheese.
If there was no problem then why did audi recall them?
I have to say tat the spoiler ruins the lines.
I think ultimtely it doesn't come down to which is the better car, ity only comes down to what type of person you are.
The only front the audi wins on is perhaps build quality and interior design (gorgeous retro aluminium etc.) but on all other counts there is no comparison.
Speed, handling, looks (my opinion), reliability on a par, practicality, (boot space and rear seating), grip and then there is the JD power survey........

A new TT has ESP, a more neutral chassis, a spoiler to avoid oversteer. But the hole thing is pumped up by the press. How many people are killed because they didn't manage to drive an oversteering car like BMW and especially Porsche 911??? Did the press wrote the same articles??? And what about the Impreza: when you are not able to exploit the 4x4 system, you will have an accident!!!!

The build quality?
The TT is German, the Scooby is Japanese. That is probably the best way of putting it.
TT has that solid, heavy, clunk door feel, the subaru does not. Sometimes this goes against the TT though, as the doors are extremely heavy, and sometimes have a mind of their own and can swing out quite viciously.
I felt the Sti V has a much nicer interior to that of UK cars. The fascia and finishing seems more upmarket.
As for "turning heads" I must say that I feel the Sti won here, and quite rightly so!
Practicality - Sti V, by a million miles.
Performance - Sti V, by a million miles.
The TT is also very closely geared and you find yourself changing gear every two seconds, which can also be a pain.
I hope this helps but if you want any further info please email me.

Bagpuss,
If you want to go for a spin I will take you out for one in mine, I live close to Camberley, e-mail me if you are interested.
Even with 2 doors, the P1 is still more practical than the TT, as for looks, that is subjective. I followed a friend at the weekend, he said " Wow, your car looks GREAT"
As for handling, I took a friend for a ride on a very demanding back road, afterwards he said,"That is probably the best handling car that I have been in and not too dissimilar to a works Peugeot setup for Tarmac" I think that speaks volumes for the cars ability.
I AM happy with mine.

Has to be the P1. I seriously thought about buying a TT, but after a test drive, I bought a 'standard' UK Turbo. Bearing in mind that this will blow away the TT, what the hell will the P1 do?
TT is a great looking car, but I think the P1 would be the real enthusiasts choice.

Well this is all interesting to me. I traded my RB5 in for a new Golf Turbo and although the golf is a great car (it really does everything very well) it is only 'nippy'.
Visiting the VW/Audi garage the other day what did I find outside but my car, totally spanking still for sale.
Now I was going to look at an Audi TT as my fiance is having the Golf and all I can say is :-
I WANT MY SCOOBY BACK RIGHT NOW
It looks fantastic with the looks of a car that just chews tarmac!! I am sick of not being able to humilaite the MAX POWER brigade by not taking their bait whilst driving a car that will blow almost every car away!!
In my opinion 0-60 in anything over 5.5 secs is PANTS!!
Get the P1 or go for the TT and buy a wig.
Cheers
Andy

The TT is just a flattened Beetle
Autocar did a comparison between the TT and a standard spec Scoob last year and the scoob won. There can't be any comparison with a P1.
Have you noticed that all cars from Audivolkswagonskodaporche look the same? You dont want to be just one of the crowd, now, do you?

Is 'Beauty and the Beast' the most obvious apropriate cliche ?
It's a bit rich Impreza owners having the nerve to refer to the TT as 'ugly' when we drive around in something that could, at best,be described as 'purposeful' looking.
I reckon the TT is absolutely stunning to look at and has one of the best interior's I've yet come across in any car.
However, to drive there's no comparison;
I'd take the beast every time.
