Legality of driving away imported car from docks...
#1
Hi
Picking up me scoob tomorrow from newcastle docks, last time i imported i trailered the car home, total pain in the a$$!
I did see alot of cars driving out of the docks with no number plate or anything on them?
I am ok to drive home like that (no number plate/tax tho i will be insured)?
Be alot less hassle!

When I drove mine back in March '02, I had no plates but (essential!) fully comp insurance based on the VIN.
I was stoeed by the lads in blue on the M62, and they were very fair and charming. Just said, provided you're taking it home, you're OK. They even commented on how they liked Scoobs!
Get your insurance sorted out and rest easy mate.

Insurance is sorted with Admiral, who insured it on the VIN No., fully comp.
Don't suppose anyone in the north west area could loan me some trade plates for tomorrow in ? Otherwise I'll drive it back as is.

Maybe you could phone your local police station and ask wot you need, that way if you get stopped and traffic cop's say your not legal you could argue the case that you followed advise from the police. As call's to police station are recorded (i think)you would have prove of your intention's to drive the car legally.

as far as i know on the dvla sight it says you can drive from the docks to either your house and you can drive the car on the road to and from a garage to get the car sva tested and get it registered on the road.
which docks you pickin it from. if its vnewcastle may see you there cos im gonna pick mine up aswell

Go ahead and pick it up without any plates. You'll find the police will take a very lenient veiw. You are allowed to drive a car on the public road unregistered as long as you are attending an SVA/MOT, retest or going to have work done. When I was picking up cars individually I used to book an MOT at my local test centre. If you're very friendly with them you don't even have to turn up. If you do get stopped then you can rightly claim to be on your way to a pre-booked MOT, on one occasion a copper even checked my story.

From the dvla website
The vehicle should not be used or kept on public roads until the licensing and registration formalities have been completed. However, if the vehicle needs to have an SVA (see section A "Type Approval") or MOT test in order to be registered, the vehicle may be driven to and from the pre-arranged test appointment.
So, book an MOT with a local garage before you set off and you should be fine.
if you are going along distance ask about forward transport from your shipping company it might be worth it,I got my last one from shampton docks for £90 to my door.

Nick,
Sorry. What I meant was, yes I know you are allowed to drive the car from the point of import (usually the docks) to your house, as long as you have insurance. What you are not allowed to do is drive it around without UK plates on it.
The point I was making though was, you'd have to be extremely unlucky to a) even get stopped and even if you did b) get nicked for driving on temp plates.
It is technically illegal but the cops don't seem to be that bothered about it.
