Firstly, hello! I've been reading scoobynet for a few months now but have finally got round to registering.

A few questions about my scoob though! I have a UK MY98 turbo, and pretty happy with it

The car is standard, apart from the exhaust. The previous owner has fitted a P1 back box, but I don't know if any other sections were changed at the same time. Is there any visable differences between standard and de-cat pipes? From reading posts on here de-cat seems to be the way to go, but it may have been done already? It sounds sweet at the moment though

Next question is are there any scooby specialists in the Birmingham area? For my sins I am living in Telford at the mo, but the nearest specialist I can see is the Nottingham area, and that's a pain in the backside to get to from here.

Anyway, I'm sure these will be the first of many questions!!

Cheers, Matt

Hello and welcome

Your P1 exhaust is virtually the same as the twin-pea shooter that comes as standard, in terms of performance gains.

As you've noticed though, it does sound nicer. You can usually tell the de-cat, because the centre section (for example) will usually be a straight-through piece of pipe....

The P1 backbox is quite restrictive though. There are loads to choose from, but the most popular seem to be the ScoobySport, Prodrive (and to a lesser extent the WR Sport), teh Blitz range and of course, TSL's sewage pipe!!

Personally, I've got a Scoobysport system on mine, and I'm rather chuffed, to say the least.

The "For Sale" section is THE place to look for this stuff

Secondly, I'm just down the road (Herefordshire) - in terms of specialists, I'm sure other people in your area will be able to recommend companies

All the best,

Dan

Cheers for that, I didn't realise the P1 box was restrictive! I have to be a little carefull with noise levels, this is my only car so have to do motorway etc in it and don't want anything that's going to be too loud - it would different if it was a weekend car, the sewage pipe would be straight on

I'll have to look through previous posts to find a good comprimise between noise and performance gain.

I just have to be carefull with mods, I have a nasty feeling that I'm at the start of long downward spiral of credit card denting

I do have to do something about the brakes though

Yes, upgrade the brakes. The Godspeed groupbuy on Brembo 4-pots looks good, or look for some later model 4-pots in the forsale section.
As for your exhaust, as said earlier, the catalyser is on the part of the exhaust round about under the drivers seat (maybe a bit forward of that toward the engine), and is a big silencer, with a heatshield round it. Have a look under, if it just goes straight back with a 2 1/2" pipe from the downpipe to the backbox, then it's decatted

Hi
Some decat centre sections are straight through bits of piping which you should spot. Some though, are resonated, which means they have a bulge to keep the noise down which looks just like the catalyst but is in fact just an empty chamber - so hard to spot those.

I'm hoping to get it up on a ramp soon so i'll be able to have a good look then, I imagine it's going to be standard as the rest of the car is, I think the P1 box was put on to "liberate" the scooby rumble

Having read lots of threads about blowing engines due to faulty MAF sensors I think a replacement one of those should be first on my shopping list, although most of the duff ones do seem to be 99/00 year cars so perhaps it's just me being paranoid!

No need to replace your MAF sensor if there's actually nothing wrong with it though. You'd notice if it was playing up from the idle etc and yes it's mostly MY99/00 MAFs that seem to have problems and this is often when induction kits etc are fitted. Better putting the money towards the de-cat if you find out you don't already have it in my opinion!

I have Magnex front and rear pipes on me MY99 sounds and looks the b*llocks imo not loud on the motorway but great with the window down at 6000 revs.As said above open the bonnet, locate the turbo and follow the pipe back you will see a heat shield surrounding the cat unless of course its gone.I just got the b/box at first which sounds great but I dont regret the £200 for the front pipe, pulls better and sounds better.Welcome m8

Is changing the pipes over a simple enough diy job? I hate working on exhausts - all the studs are usually far to rusty and prone to snapping off! if I do it myself then a good soaking in WD beforehand will be in order

Oh - forgot to put in my first post that cider boy comes from my growing up in rural Somerset. I am not a hardened cider drinker though, Smirnoff and Red Bull any day
