Tony,

No, I wouldn't think its normal at all to have no oil level on your dipstick, after 4500mls. I use Mobil 1 Motorsport, but then I have a STI Type-R. Not sure what you should be using on a UK car.

I certainly wouldn't start it again until you have oil in there!!

Craig.

Tony, I had the same symptoms on my my03 after the run in service checked it a week later after doing 1200 miles up Scotland, it was well below min. mark on dipstick, when you check it make sure the engine is at normal operating temp, but be warned I only had to put just over half a litre in to get it to max. Its not really used any oil since so I reckon the dealers just use a fixed metering system when filling and don't top up to the full mark.
Dealers rec.5w 30 fully synthetic, but I also believe that Castrol magnatec 10w 40 is authorised by Subaru, but don't mix, ask the dealer what oil they used on the first service.

Craig & Deano

Thanks for the advice. I need to use the car tomorrow so I got 5l of Castrol magnatec 10w 40 from Halfrauds.

Deano you were right it took less than a litre to get it half way up the dipstick.

Dont use the 5w30, its use is for 0 deg and below only, use the
10w40 as per the user handbook.

Question

Tony, is your info from a current owners manual, because mine definately states 5w-30 as the preffered oil, I was concerned about this and contacted my dealer who said they use Shell ultra 5w-30. My handbook states 5w-30 for temps. 40 deg.C down to below -30 deg C.
Don't get me wrong on this I will be putting Castrol Magnatec 10w-
40 in mine more for the higher operatig temp, plus it is freely available at work, if you know what I mean.

Cheers Deano.
