what is the chattery sound coming from my engine between 2 and 4 thousand revs under half pedel? sounds like its from the turbo area?

Depends on your model year, MY99/00 uk cars suffered from vibrating brake lines against the bulkhead (drivers side i think) which is in the same rev range as you state, it could be this.
If your still worried though, go to a dealer/speciallist and find out exactly what the problem is as without hearing it its pretty hard to guess.

Does it only happen when you lift off of change gear?

If so its your wastegate and nothing to worry about.

its a 96 wrx wagon. hhmm doesnt sounds like brake lines but more like the turbo or intake its self. I though wastegate????????? hope its not goofed

no it happens on half power worse when cold between 2 and 4 revs and sounds like air been blown through and small hole!!???

Ah so like blowing over a bottle top?
As stated above, its the blow off valve.

Its to do with the japanese thinking that the wagon was a family car and if your beating your mates 93wrx then id say he's got something up with his car.
