Trouble is they're both wrong!
It's model year, not "manufactured year". The two things are quite different, and the difference is important.
You can have an MY97 (to continue Pete's example) car that was actually manufactured in 1996, as the model year changeover normally occurs in late September to early October at the factory, with the cars filtering through to dealers in various parts of the world over the subsequent few weeks/months.
