Gutting phone conversation with subaru dealer
#1
Just had a telephone chat today with my local Subaru dealer. I need to get rid of my car a bit sharpish so knowing I'd take a hit I asked what he'd give me for it. It's MY00 turbo FSSH with 77k on the clock. He said he wouldn't take it full stop and then told me what he thought it would be worth selling for private £6000 not prepared to take that sort of a hit so I'm praying he's well off the mark. What do you guys reckon?

As always it's all dependant on the condition etc but I'd have guessed at somewhere between 8-9k myself. 6k has to be giving it away I'd have thought. Good luck anyway, or just keep it!

When I said how surprised I was the dealer asked me what I would hope to get and I said about 8200-8300 he said I may as well just give him the advertising fee as it would NEVER sell anyway near that. I'd also point out that this was a phone conversation and he never saw the car. I later offered the car to another specialist car dealer again over the phone and he said he may give me around £7000.

In November I got £5300 for my MY97 wagon with 97k on the clock, after slowly dropping the price from £6950. Some of the prices in the Scoobynet "for sale" section are a bit hopeful IMHO, but I would have thought yours should be worth a couple of thousand more than mine.

SEBASTION I hope your wearing a flame suit m8 cause comments like that wont win you any mates on scoobynet.
77k is not high mileage for a start, scoobys are good for over 200k, and the "classic" is still the best shaped scooby by far, totally biased opinion of course!

In October 2003 I got £8000 trade in for my wife's T reg UK MY99 standard throughout with 72K on the clock and this despite it needing the rear bumper painting and it having been in a front end smash (which I told the dealer about - being the honest person I am).
£6K is definitely taking the ****.

Use this to get a guide valuation. Crucially it lets you enter the mileage. I tried it with details similar to yours and it came in around the £6500 mark for private sale, and £5k trade in. If the mileage was more reasonable at around 30k, it would be around £9-11k. Sorry, but the dealer is near the mark. Scoob nuts may know the cars are good for it, but the general public don't like starship mileage.

I think you could do a lot better than £6k but the biggest factor
must be the mileage which would put some people off. Personally it wouldn't bother me too much if the car was in good condition.
The dealer's attitude isn't worthy of a response.
Good luck with the sale.

A searh on the Subaru website shows a W reg turbo, standard, with 78000m on it up for £11495. There's even a 98 Sport with 67000m for £6995.
Despite the naysayers and doom merchants on here I reckon you'll get a lot more privately or with another dealer.
He's havin' a giraffe!!

I don't think it is just Subaru, think it is UK car dealers in general. I have had bad experiences with VW, Vauxhall and Peugeot - too soon to say yet on Subaru. I also know people who have had a bad time with Alfa as well.

There was a MY00 on the forecourt of a dealer in Warrington up for 12k in Nov it was gone by Dec and he had a 97 up for 10k the month before and when I went past someone was looking at it!(not in disbelief I think) He wouldnt have them in if he couldnt shift them he only sells top end motors. If classics are so sh*t why are we all on here (classic owners) and why have some people been coming on here for years discussing the attributes of them. Surely the fact that we're all on here means they must be worth quite a lot to some of us?IMO

Got 8k tradein for my99 turbo 89000miles,Granted it had some prodrive alloys, rear spoiler, exhaust etc,But this time of year has to be the best to be buying from a dealer(xmas just gone, empty pockets etc)i just stood my ground and did not budge on monthly payment what i wanted to pay,And after about three days of haggleing my trade in value came to £7950(oh and then i stripped the car LOL)

It's pretty rare for a car to be worth 50-60% of it's new value after 3 years, and the Impreza pretty much held up to those levels. According to that WhatCar site, my MY99 (i.e. 4 years old) wagon with 53k miles is worth about £9k private. Assuming I lost 20% in the last year, it was worth just over £11k last year, i.e. over 50% of new value. And that's over 3 years when the new price has actually gone down.
These cars are starting to get on a bit now, and we shouldn't wonder why they're only going for the price of a new Clio RN. They were bargains at £21k new, so they're going to be bargains now.
I do however wonder who's making any money on cars (dealers, obivously) - you try to buy a second hand MY99/00 for £6-7k. Not possible. On the other hand try to sell one for £9k - not sure you'll have much luck there either. It's a tough world made even tougher by the cheap price of new cars.

You may well see other car up for sale at £8.5k and so on...but do they sell....
You could stick your car up for what YOU want for it, but will people pay that for it......If you want shot quick it has to be cheap to tempt people!!

Heres another moan at Subaru car dealers,
Before I bought mine privately, I went to my main dealer and there cars where two grand over priced!
I even told him to look at the autotrader online to prove I wasnt lying.
They just shrug their shoulders and mumble on about Subaru Gold waranties...
I think cos they are a more specialised car manufacturer they can take big liberties.
Rant over

..thats 49000 miles, not a 490.00 litre engined turbo!
