Question

Hi all,

I am interested in purchasing a Subaru Legacy GT estate but I am having trouble finding information in English. From the limited information I have managed to gather, I understand the GT-B is the same car as the GT but the suspension has been tweaked using Bilstein components and with some technical expertise by Porsche (not sure if that's correct). There also seems to be E-Tune and VDC models but I don't know anything about these.

Does anybody have any information on the different Legacy GT Estate models? What are the positives and negatives with owning one?

Thanks.

I have a 99 GTB new shape. It has proved difficult to find much information to help owners fully understand the car in terms of capabilities and maintenance.
Overall it provides the owner with a positive experience. Power wise it offers 280 bhp at the wheels. No idea what the torque is. Mine produces about 1.1 bat at 6200 revs.Handles in a very gentle fashion(in comparison with my my03 sti8) has a gentle understeer and very light progressive steering. Good performance requires hard driving but is rewarded with everything you expect from a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Acceleration is average feels like 60 in about 6-7 seconds. Top speed for me has been around 160mph on the clock. Brakes are crap, Chassis is first class and suspension is moderately hard. The car has no bounce- no torque steer- no tram ining and offers same handling wet and dry road.

Spare part are tough re mapping is very tough and the exhaust system is a one off. Servicing costs are reasonable. Given there are so few of them on the road I think they are a great choice of car.

Let me know if you want any other info

Err - 280bhp at the flywheel on a manual and 260bhp on an auto. This is only for late MY96+. Pre MY96 are ~230bhp auto & 250bhp manual. Earlier cars are quicker due to being significantly lighter.
I agree that the brakes could be better, but I have not had issue with them for fast road use. You do need to wind it up past 4500rpm to get the most out of it as the first turbo only gives about 150bhp.
They are superbly drivable as the man says - get one! Far less hectic than an Impreza, yet will give the Impreza a run for its money and often a kicking! (ooer - controvertial! (sp?) )
I awiat the Impreza brigade onslaught!!!!

Thumbs up

Hi recently got the scooby bug with my early legacy GT which IMHO is the best and most sophisticated car I have ever owned, Having had sports cars on and off ever since god was a boy the scooby is just so so different, sure it will drink the juice if you floor it but you do have the option for a light right foot and if so is reasonably econmical especialy with the fourspeed auto box
I particularly wanted an estate and because my driving is a mixture of urban and motorway an auto box was OK
This can save you thousands on purchase price
D'ont tell everbody or they will all want one and the price will go up!
I have contacts for a trustworthy importer and also a local import service specialist which both have given me excellent cost effective purchase, information, after sales back up and service
I f you want contact details please email me off my profile

Cheers guys. So there's no reason not to buy one. Good! Still, which one should I buy? I'm still not sure what the difference is between the different models though. I like the look of the '96+ models (BG5) over the earlier models (slight face lift) and from what I've seen on Autotrader and Exchange & Mart, they are in my price range.

Adrian, I'll send you an email for those contact details.

I've had a few 96 (facelift) models and they are good.

The manual is quite a bit quicker than the auto, and there is a bit of lag between the turbo's.

The advantage to the auto though is cost, as most are auto they are a lot cheaper to import than the manual.

I've ordered another one and it's costing about 6k (96 auto, blue 50k (miles)). Let me know if you want more details.
