HPI - How reliable??

Looking at a car for the missus, all looks good but would feel alot better if I have it Hpi'd. Has anybody ever had any bad experiences after buying the car even if they had it checked?

and also, are HPI/equifax(?) legally liable for any false information they provide?

From what I remember, the standard HPI check is covered up to £10,000, presumably as an indemnity against erroneous info.

Have a look at the HPIcheck website, I'm sure it will tell you what you need to know.
