Supermarket wagon & mods?

For cost savings is it worth buying a WRX wagon from a supersite at about 17k (imported obviously) and then modding it? I believe you cannot get the ppp on an import. What mods would be the best to go for or would most of you bite the bullet and go UK all the time and take that extra hit in the wallet?
