About to fit some slightly larger round speakers on the rear shelf of my 4-door.

There is an adaptor fitted at the moment for the origional round speakers, this is secured by 3 bolts. If this is removed you are left with a sort of elipticle hole presumable for elipticle speakers.

what I need to do is remove the standard round hole plate and enlarge slightly.

How do I remove this, as I can remove the 3 bolts but the hole in the material on the shelf is too small to extract the plate.

I presume I have to remove the seat ?????

You're right Scott.

To get rid of the adaptor plate, you've got to remove the rear shelf. To do so, you must first remove the back seat. A five minutes job , even if you're not very gifted in DIY: Two bolts for the leg cussion, three bolts for the back one. (That is if you don't have a folding backseat, in which case you can leave the leg cussion installed).

To remove the rearshelf itself, it is easier if someone gives you a hand, as it is fixed by several clips. Have the other guy climb inside the boot (well, ok, he can do it from outside too) and squeeze the clips together with some pliers, while you pull the shelf up and forward. If you have a folding backseat, you can do it on your own.

Whilst we're on the subject of speakers, these eliptical holes that are left, they wouldn't fit 6 x 9 speakers would they??

When I whip the adaptor plates out I'll measure the size of the larger holes and let you know.

I have just fitted 160W 6x9 inch Kenwoods in the parcel shelf of my MY99. Like Dan said, take the seats out etc but I had to remove the trims on either rear pillar. They are fixed with the mother of all clips all are fixed all way to the centre pillar of the car!!
Once they were out the way I found the rear shelf was glued to the bottom of the screen. Use a sharp knife to cut the shelf fabric away from under the shelf. You will need to bend the shelf to get under it.

6x9's sound very good (I have some 200W Kenwoods- found I didn't need an amp). I found you could bolt them under the existing aperture, and use small lengths of draught excluder tape to fill in the gaps (between the shelf pressing and speaker).

Took me hours to do- getting the seats and trim out is a nightmare (don't want to break trim do you!)
