Question

I can’t decide whether to have my 17” Prodrive Speedline Mistrals refurbished in gold or silver. My 96 UK 5 door is metallic green and the wheels are currently silver and in need of a freshen up. I think I want them gold but having seen an increasing number of Novas, Golfs and RS Turbo lookalikes with wheels that have been treated to a can of Halfords finest gold, I’m wondering if it’s all getting a bit naff?

Been gold for a year now..no regrets or intentions to change.Although you've a green car and i have seen that graphite (P1) coloured wheels on the green and they look ding dong, as for silver ..not sure.

Also green with Gold MIM man.

I looked at all 3 on the car before going for the gold (with about 10 tyre fitters gathered round offering comments.

Everybody including my girlfriend said it had to be gold.

Personally, I have loved anthracite wheels since they came out on the Volvo 850R. And have always fancied some for me Scoob as it happens I have 17" Gold S02s.

However the best looking 850R was the metallic green, with the sexy anthracite wheels. Try before you buy.

PS Ian who’s refurbing your wheels and at what cost??

I had anthracite wheels (Volvo T5 colour code) on my MY97 green car!

It looked stunning!!

I think gold wheels look dirty, and am not impressed when I see them on green cars. Graphite on the other hand, looks good on the car.

Forget the gold, and if you don't like the graphite, stick with SILVER!!

I think you'll find gold wheels have always been naff

Anthracite wheels, however, have always been cool

Who wants anthracite wheels that look like they're covered in brake dust, even after you've cleaned them?? That's like painting the bodywork beige because it hides the dirt!!!

At least the Impreza is the only car that is supposed to have gold wheels. All the lookalikes are copying the Scooby. Just ask any youngster in a baseball cap!

I've got a DBM MY99...Can't afford new wheels or 17" and tyres, etc...

Quite fancied getting the originals chromed...Nice clean and simple design, should work well. Especially against the dark blue.

Or am I just getting old?

Took the gold wheels off my Terzo when I bought it, specified them to be silver at purchase.

Firstly I thought they were utterly tasteless, secondly I thought the car would get enough undesirable attention as is.

I now have silver ones and the usual cleaning problem. Anthracite might be good. But no gold for me please.

Each to their own

17 Speedline Chronos in Gold look awsome on redish blue cars.

No I don't have this combo but seeing this made me test drive a Scooby and buy one !!

the only naff thing about subaru supplied gold wheels is that they are just spray painted (thinly at that!) -
I find that builders in the passenger seat of transit vans stare at them a lot for some reason.
I borrowed a wrx courtesy car in red with gold wheels recently - I thought that looked very tacky and like a pimp's car - my own car is a black sti and I think the gold looks ok with the darker colour. Dark Blue also looks good with gold wheels - can't say I am fond of the contrast with silver or green though - each to his own.

Finally - tatty gold wheels look worse than tatty silver ones (check out an ageing clio williams to see what I mean) - as the bare metal shows up against the gold - if you kerb your wheels it can look very messy if they are sprayed gold like mine are - tidying up silver wheels after a 'scrape' is easy with a bit of wet+dry but the gold ones will need spraying to hide the scuffs - worth considering before buying.

I've always thought gold wheels look a bit "Jimmy Saville"

The Stars25 has gold wheels but I got Wim to swap them to silver before I went over to collect mine.

The P1 and EVO VI extreme wheels are fab IMO.

Everytime I go to my dealer he has a set of 17" gold MIM wheels and nice low profile tyres. It may cost me a grand, but on of these days, I'm going to buy them.

As far as I'm concerned, there have only ever been two cars that have got away with gold alloys - the Clio Williams (mentioned earlier I think) and the Impreza.

Personally I think the colour of your car makes a big difference. They look better on the blue or green.

S*d the money and go for the gold.

Cool

Depends on the colour of the car I think, don't worry about what other people think.... choose based on what you think.

These wheels are on my car:

Mike,

I bet you rolled the car around a bit to get the spokes into that position, you sad man you...

Can you get these wheels in a grey/black colour and how heavy are they compared to standard 16" subaru wheels? (Sorry, didn't read entire thread above, so I might be asking something that's already been asked. )

Gold is a bit too Boy Racer "I used to drive a souped up Nova but now I've got some money but still no taste". Bit Max Power really.

Flame suit on and ducking for cover...
