They are ok - don't forget you get no warranty of any kind though and dealers aren't gonna give anything away! Have you thought of importing your own? I did - 93 WRX with all STi kit, 300+ BHP, Coil Overs etc etc for £2700 which includes import duties and shipping. The whole process only took around six weeks. Registration was easy too - cost £25 and £90 for six months road tax. The only item needed for the MOT (pre SVA) was a rear fog lamp! Good luck!

I'd take someone with me who knows what "he's looking at" if I was you, buying from auctions can be very misleading and you can sometimes be caught out and ripped off with a real clunker which only gets you back home before starting to play up. I'm not saying all are like this, but there is always more than "one reason" for a car to be in auction, plus you cant actuall speak to the original owner like buying private or through a dealer can you.
A freind of mine bought from an auction down south, and he's virtually spent the equivalent price of a new one putting his right.
