I think that offically the plate is now owned by the insurance company.
Last time I was at the local DVLA office sorting out my number plate, I over heard a very similar conversation.
The DVLA were willing to put the plate on retention because the guy had a letter from his insurance company.
I guess you have two calls to make, one to the insurance company and the other to the DVLA.
I hope you get it all sorted out!

When my car was written off by Admiral insurance, the claim offer clearly stated that if the vehicle carried a private number plate I had to phone them straight away, so they could issue a letter enabling me to take it off the car.

so does that mean you'd have to declare a plate to insurers when you have a policy, now before you start sure yer guna give em yer reg anyway but say if you had a rare plate like S1 or sumin which is obviously worth a mint that you'd need to add it to value of car as such?
