I need a CCTV system to look after my scoob while I am sleeping, I want to record it all night and if there is something up with the car (if it is still there) in the morning I would be watching the tape the next day. I needs to be very clear also!!

Have any of you got anything like this? What would you recommend?

Any websites that has products that can do this?

Regards
Nick

Hi Nick

What you need is quality Kit. To record all night you'll either need a Time lapse VCR or a Digital recording device, the latter being more costly.

Camera wise Black and white gives you the best picture at night in low light but there are Cameras that switch from Colour to Mono when the light level drops to far. Be cautious of your lighting and Camera Mix. An IR Lamp is a good idea cos the output is constant, if you had a DAY/NIGHT Switching (COL/MONO) Camera with a Halogen on a detector for example then there would be a time lag as the camera switches back to colour as the light comes on. This could easily cause you to miss any incident and render the whole system useless....

What ever you do don't get caught up in the B&Q DIY CCTV revolution because the bottom line is if your motor gets vandalised or nicked the police and CPS will want to back up the case with your CCTV and if it ain't no good you may aswell not have bothered.

Let me know If I can be of any assistance as I run a CCTV Company and am always happy to help a fellow owner.

I've been thinking about this and getting one, but would a "Motion Sensor" one not be better, I.e it starts recording when the camera detect motion? Yeah your get about half an hour of cats wandering past but you wouln't have 12 hours of tape in the morning used up??!?!

Can anyone shed any light on a good one? Listy? I've seen some on ebay for 60 odd notes, these any good?

Thanks for that Listy – very useful.

I have got a time lapse VCR from my dad – don’t know what it is but it is only 2yrs old so it is still ok.

I have just been looking at cameras on the website www.iviewcameras.co.uk and noticed this one (Voltek Wired Professional Outdoor Day(Colour)/Night Vision (B&W) Vision CCTV Camera £214.95 (inc VAT and FREE delivery)).
Is it any good?

What camera would you recommend me? I will not be using it through the day as I only sleep at night and the car is only there at night.

Thanks Nick

I use a high quality webcam that will only record if there is any movement. Apparently, you can get the software to send you an MMS message to your phone if the movement in each frame gets above a preset threshold.

the one in my house sent me 14 email messages that neatly captured some post coming through the letter box and landing on the floor last week. cool.

you can get software that does this for windows; but I use Linux and software called 'motion'. all free.

Ive got a system based round a pc. It has a 60GB hard drive and a 4 camera video capture card.It has 4 day/night cameras on it.They are 1/3" ccd cameras and are colour by day but switch to black and white at night.I also have Infra red illuminators on them. The video card will capture all 4 cameras simultaneously and record the images as avi files at 25fps.The system is hosted on the internet ( as a secure ftp server) and I can view or control the system over the internet from the laptop on my desk 60 miles away.IMHO the camera are the weakest link they occasional suffer problems with the autowhite balance and the picture appears dark however changing the psu from 12v to 13.2v seems to have cured this. The lenses in the cameras are available from maplins for £4 - £12 depending on type ( field of view / aperature / focal length etc )All 4 camera inputs are set up to motion detect record so they only record when movement is sensed. All parameters are adjustable in software ( detection zone , sensitivity alarm recording etc etc).
Now the spendy bits Card - £30 - £100 on ebay , it includes the PICO 2000 software - do a search on it.
Cameras £20 - £45 from ebay - all the same external with 18 IR leds but the IR is not brilliant hence the additional illuminators which cost £20 each. I have put the viewing software onto a usb memory stick and watched the house and the car from an internet cafe whilst on holiday in Spain.

All the advice on the previous threads are sound its really down to budget and performance.

if you want cheap and simple, get a webcam, old laptop and GOTCHA software.

you can record vids, take snapshots, have it ring your mobile or pager if any motion is detected, and you can connect and view accross the internet anywhere in the world. its probably like the software above, but is super simple to use.

My wife has recently started a new company which involves CCTV.
Equicam.co.uk!

Although aimed at the equine world, we can supply just about any CCTV equipment you require.
We have an account with one of the suggested links on these posts, so I might be able to get some discount on their prices.

Drop me a mail if you fancy giving us a go at quoting, or mail my wife/equicam directly on: equicam@aol.com

We would be pleased to help fellow Scooby owners and I'm sure my wife would appreciate any business for the new company.

I look forward to being of any assistance

Marty
PS: Keep an eye out for a green wagon with EQUICAM.CO.UK in the windows!!

I am the UK distributor for Inetcam of which 3 scooby drivers have installed allready.

Visit : meacus.inetcam.com for a demo and hit the video icon for realtime viewing.
The system does not require you to download any software as it runs automatically in a browser window.
You can stream realtime motion, record motion and stream it realtime over the net, email alert you of any motion.
I have one night cam running at the moment with other to follow including the ability to control PTZ cameras coming soon.

Rgds,

Dave.

Id really like to experiment with this, by leaving the scoob parked outside a pub on a Friday night, and see how long it lasted before being keyed.

Woooooowwww.....

go the PC route...
simple TV card from the computer fair, £20. A low light cam... must be black and white for real low light 0.01 lux, you can see in very low light without IR, "adding IR lamp will give complete darkness" around £75 delivered.. I use some software called i-catcher you can monitor the image for movement and record video or stills if something moves, also upload to the web or watch from the internet anywhere. SW is about £60 now i think but its very good. Or and some HD space around 40gb is fine as you can auto delete after a couple of days!
thats all you need and its dead easy to setup.

cameras @

Thats it nothing else,

Dazza

Same here , still wading thru loads of different systems , I thinkl what is needed is

Outdoor camera
Night Vision
PIR with VCR activation
Preferably wireless

Struggling to find something that does all this at a reasonable price

I think the big problem will be getting the video to record on activation of the pir. Its easy to get a tv to select the AV scart on movement by applying 12v on pin 8 of the scart but I dont recall any videos that will record when this signal is given.

Some older videos had a remote pause socket which could easily be adapted to do what you want but I think it would be heavy on video heads as it would be in a permanent state of record

You Dont need to spend too much money on kit, You can get a sharp VCR from Argos for about £90. that has a 12hr recording function on it. There's cctv camera's in Argos too with one that has an auto recording function for starting your video when it detects movement for about £95. and to go with that you want a powerfull motion detecting spotlight to light the buggers up. The only downfall with cctv is if your not watching it 24/7 then you will only be able to record the crime (should it happen) and hope that either:
The thieves dont bother to cover up their faces
and if you can see them the police know them otherwise you'll be lucky to get your pride and joy back in one piece.

It would be better to spend the money on beefing up your security i.e. get some locking bollards fitted to your drive, so that its physically impossible to get your car out of the garage or off the drive without them using some big noisey machinery to cut the bollards off first. Make sure you lock your car keys away or take them to bed with you as now car security is so good on new cars that the thieves just break into your house to get the keys.

Oh and should you catch anyone trying to nick or break into your car, when you phone the police tell them your about to stab or shoot them as you will get an immediate response from them otherwise you could end up waiting for hours for them to turn up.
