Not piston slap, it's the timing belt slapping slightly against the outside plastic protection caused by a slightly faulty belt-tensioner. Let me guess, you've got a MY99 or MY00?
My MY00 (PPP) does it, just be nice to it until it's warmed up .
It looooves the winter - about an extra 1-2psi of boost, pickup is quicker, sounds better... so much nicer . So I'm looking forward to temps down to -15C when I hit peak 20psi boost, 18.5psi held .

yeah, cos dealers are always right, right? they won't just say it is piston slap when they know full well it's the timing belt and then charge you a fortune for a remedy that has cost them bollock all?
get it checked independantly by a trustworthy mechanic if you can find one, although most places see a scooby owner and guess that he's a computer geek who knows nothing about motors and know they can rip him off.
not saying it is one thing or the other, but if there's a known issue with timing belts... and i would be very disappointed if a 4 year old car had problems with piston slap - unless you've driven it to to the moon and back.

Nope not gone to the moon and back ! just 36,000 miles , cam belt tensioner was changed with the belt back in Feb of this year .I have stuck my head under the bonnet whilst 'bliping ' the engine and the noise doesn't seem to come from the front of the engine where I (think) the belt is . I'm a bit pi**ed off by it TBH and have read many threads on here about it . It seems in most cases they wont repair it under warranty as they say it doesn't harm the car (my extended warranty runs out end of this month), guess I should have a moan ?

Smoother and faster ..... even a boggo 03 WRX! - "Monstered" a 300bhp Jag XK8 along a dual carriageway last night. Now I know they are slow of the line, but was still surprised to waft past him .......
