Now then,

I will be purchasing a scooby in the next week or so and have about 14k to spend. Which Scooby should I go for and why? Details on servicing, performance, reliability etc.. would be great
Having already owned an RB5 I would like a change but am unsure what to go for

Cheers

am I missing sumfink: how can you be a novice if you owned an RB5?
I've no idea what to go for next - though recent thread re number of P1's around might be of interest?

we could do with more info as to what your requirements are, are you fussed about it being UK or import? or a particular shape?

Now then

Sorry for the lack of info, when I said novice I meant I am a novice when it comes to the import cars as there seems to be lots of different models about and am worried about things such as;

1) Can I get an import impreza serviced by my local Subaru dealer?
2) Fuel types - I have heard that imports are not to be run on normal unleaded fuel - is this true?
3) Insurance - My current insurer will not touch imports - where would be best/cheapest to insure
4) Reliability – Will an import be as reliable as my RB5
5) In others experience which is the most practical/fast/reliable etc..

Any info would be really helpful

Many thanks

Ask them. Some will, some won't touch with bargepole.

2) Fuel types - I have heard that imports are not to be run on normal unleaded fuel - is this true?
Hell yes. Even UK cars run noticeably better on Super. Japanese imports must either be remapped or run on Super/Opti/Ultimate plus the correct amount of a good octane booster. Fitment of a KnockLink is also strongly recommended, although this is also good practice on a UK car.

3) Insurance - My current insurer will not touch imports - where would be best/cheapest to insure
Look in the Insurance forum, plenty of info there.

4) Reliability – Will an import be as reliable as my RB5
Slightly a "piece of string" question. If you buy a good one and maintain it properly, there's no reason to think reliability would be any less good than what you are used to. However, buy one that's been thrashed, either in Japan or here, had silly mods done or been run on the wrong fuel, it could be a timebomb. As with any used car purchase, minimise the risks by finding out as much as you can about the history of any potential purchase, and walk away if in any doubt.

5) In others experience which is the most practical/fast/reliable etc..
Practical? In what way? Practical in the space sense, get a wagon. Practical in the living with sense, UK car, as you can fill up anywhere if push comes to shove, no issues with servicing, plenty of choice within (and outside) the dealer network, and no problems with associated warranties.

Fast? A good STI5 Type R given your budget.
Reliable? See above.

1) Depends on the dealer, but why not look for an Independent?

2) I personally wouldnt run a UK Impreza on NUL, for an import its gotta be Optimax + OB (IMO), alternatively get the ecu remapped for 97/98 ron fuel (ie SUL, Shell Ultimate or Optimax).

3) Try Tescos or Liverpool Victoria

4) Depends on condition, service record (if you get one with it that is) and how you treat it. Regular between service interval oil changes are recommended. Warm it up and warm it down nicely too.

5) "practical/fast/reliable" all different criteria so you will probably have to compromise on one aspect to gain in another. I wouldnt go for an RA if I did lots of motorway miles, its personal preference at the end of the day. A P1? - with your budget I would think that might not be wise as I think one going that cheap was hiding something nasty.

I went for an import, an MY93 WRX but then I only had £5k to spend on a second car.

1) i very much doubt it, but ive read on here that some do
2) imports run on 100 ron in japan, so unless you get it remapped you'll need optimax, octane booster (NF is most popular) and watch it with a knockink etc etc.
3) try Liv & Vic, Greenlight, tescos (need a tracker), direct line. bear in mind it wil be dearer than a uk.
4) Not sure - i never owned an import. cant see why not, although i believe the STi5 engines can be a bit dodgy
5) Imports caome with 276 bhp standard (after a certain MY though) and more extras - fold in mirrors, rear wipe etc etc.

HTH, most is what ive picked up of here over the years

many thanks,

i am going to look at a few different impreza's this weekend, just another question - what's a "knock link" ?
One of the cars I'm interested in is the STI 5 LTD on the following site - Is this a good price/model/spec ?

http://www.tridentperformance.co.uk/

Cheers

Jezza - I am considering selling my classic 4dr STI6 (W-plate). Its Cashmire Yellow, done 15,000 miles, has a full Scooby Sport exhaust and Tracker fitted (but you'd need to get this transferred into your name). Other than that its totally standard. I've owned it from new and it was imported by Toystore Motor Company.

Don't mean to hijack your thread but if you don't ask ...
