'After planes and trains, Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson today announced he is moving into the automobile market.
The new business, Virgin Cars, will involve sales via the Internet and consumers are being promised cars at up to 30% lower than existing prices.
Arriving at the launch in a Mini Cooper, Sir Richard was joined by co-founder Ian Lancaster and by journalist Quentin Willson, who will quit the BBC's Top Gear programme to join the fledgling company.
Sir Richard said: "We have a situation where you can buy cars in Europe for 30% less than in Britain.
"There's an opportunity to offer people much better value than they are currently getting.
"With the Internet you can get all cars. We can sell 80% of all cars released.
"We can deliver the car to your home and if you want to get rid of the car you have already got, we can take it away.
"We will be able to look after the car for you - we can offer people a seamless product from beginning to end."
But customers will not be able to test drive vehicles before purchase.
New cars from 14 manufacturers, including Ford, Vauxhall and Rover, will be on offer, will be available to buy online from

Is there anything that bloke wont sell??
But if it get's the price of new cars down I'm all for it, despite the effect on residuals.
