Parked up outside KFC in Guildford, to visit Blockbuster last night, ended up staying there for a hour waiting for Subaru assist, as the key fob failed to work and the key pad wouldn't accept the code! People muttering as they walk past - "that guys stealing that car!"... just how stupid a thief would you have to be to try that!

Key fob suddenly worked 5 mins before Subaru assist arrived, so cancelled the call out and when on my way..

But going into the garage to get the pin checked etc..

Ah well, works fine now, key fob that is.

Exclamation

There must have been something blocking the signal from the keyfob.

Ask the garage where the aerial is for the alarm, as sometimes standing right next to it with the blipper can disarm it.

replace the remote battery as a matter of routine too. As a weak a battery can cause some headaches like the above

edited to add "remote" - you never know...don't want anyone replacing their car batteries for no good reason

Sounds like a moblie mast nearby blocking the signal , if it happens again try rolling the car down the road a few meters to see if it works , might be worth a try

As its getting cold your battery in the fob is going to start playing up if its near its end of shelf life.

My advise...

Buy a spare set of batteries (there are two ) and leave them in the glove box

Jza, now that’s being silly... leaving the batteries in the glove box, what happens if the glove box is locked and can't be opened due to lock failure I reckon you should leave the batteries in the boot

Rich - but your cursed with being ginger for ever - whos laughin' now!

All - the car is two weeks old (well to me), so may be a dud battery in the key fob - but most likely it was the microwave in KFC!

I was more concerned that the key pad, was happily flashing away and not disarming the immobiliser

Cheers, Alex

Either way.. the alarm goes off. My keys open my front doors and the boot (?) and its easier to leave in the glove box

SiDHEaD - Does your routine work on the Sigma fitted to the classic cos I haven't known my pin since I bought the car?

I've just never got round to taking it somewhere to get sorted and never had to use it.

I know I ought to get it sorted before it bites me in the ****!

Thanks for the offers of the pin change procedure.
I'll email you if I require this, but want to raise it with the dealer first.

Cheers, Alex

People muttering as they walk past - "that guys stealing that car!"
Beggers belief that nobody came and asked you what you were up to.
Probably just a reflection of the times we live in, but I have challenged people in the past when alarms have gone off, and they look at you like your the one doing something wrong.
Makes you wonder why we bother fitting alarms in the first place.

Reminds me of the time i had a problem like this with my BMW. Couldn't get in no matter what. So i had to unlock the doors with the key, which set the alarm off, then dive under the bonnet to silence the siren with a key.
This was in a packed public car park and a few people were watching, but not one of them said anything.
Probably best, since i wouldn't have been able to hear them anyway, that was a bloody loud alarm!

Alex, as pippyrips says, if you want this sorting properly, they will need to change the ecu on the alarm so that it uses a different frequency. They did it to mine and it worked a treat after.

Bizarre as it may sound, you can also sometimes get it to work by holding the fob under your chin with it actually touching your chin when you press the button. Something to do with the human skeleton helping it for some reason....but it works! Find a distance far enough away from your car under normal operation so that the remote doesn't work because you are too far away. Then try the chin trick You might look daft but it works.

But I think you'll need the alarm ecu sorting.....

Thanks all - the chin thing sounds worth a go, despite looking daft

I'll also see what the dealer comes up with.

Alex,

When you punched in the PIN, did you do it with the key out of the ignition, because if the alarm was going off and the key is in the second stage it won't accept it. I just go straight to the keypad with the key in my hand and just enter the 4 digits and it'll disarm the alarm. You can also arm the alarm in this way too.

Nito - thats not what Subaru assist told me to do, I think I know the issue with the key pad now

P1njp - LOL, too true

JJK,

> HOw do you find it?

Very good - need the prodrive springs done though as I've found it gets a bit bouncy in certain circumstances.
Put about 2K miles on it so it far, its starting to loosen up gradually.

> Going to get it PPP'd?

Eventually, but probably not until next year's insurance renewal time.

> Did you get it from B&C?

Yep, No. 5 from them!

> I will be changing my RB5 WRSport at some stage.

Nice car, I think you'll like MY'03 though, its got a lot going for it.

> Did you consider and EVO?

Yes, basically I could live with the Evo as a day to day car - suspension is too unforgiving. Plus the servicing costs are rediculous.

> How is it comapared to other scoobies youve driven/had?

Its better than the P1 and MY'01 WRX, its not as quick as the P1, and drives quite differently due to the front diff. Still finding my feet with the car.

Cheers, Alex

hmmm thought there are no plans for any upgrade

BTW It's nice that people were concerned of you braking into the car, but police didn't turn up so nobody was concerned enough to call them...
