It may sound stupid but make sure your radio frequency is different to your mates. Better still buy a selection of different ones just to be on the safe side.
Clean it meticulously after you've used it. You wont believe how much damage a tiny piece of gravel does to the plastic gears etc.
Run the engine in as per instructions, and as an easy rule of thumb, if the exhaust fumes are visible then its running well. No fumes means its running too lean and runns the risk of seizing.
If your buying a kit, build it precisely as per the instructions and don't cut any corners.
Get something to carry your kit in. One of those plastic storage containers works for me.
If your getting a touring car style one (low ride height) avoid those manhole covers and gullys like the plague, they ruin the chassis plate and screw heads.
Although they need a bit of looking after, they are ten times better than a leccy one.

I've got a HPI super nitro rally with the scooby shell on it. Goes like sh*t of a shovel (2 speed box and os max engine fitted). Does about 55 - 60 mph and looks great. Check out the HPI web site on hpiracing.co.uk

I've got a nitro powered scoob too. usually with theses cars being reasonably expensive (£300 or more) the radio gear comes with interchangeable crystals so you can race your mates/club whoever without crossover.
mines a 1.8cc engine full time 4wd with little diffs at the front and rear, two speed, and a carbon clutch!
goes incredibly fast too, but its only useable on wide open flat tarmac, since you run out of space real quick. Not really a toy for outside house/street racing - its just too quick, electric ones are much better for this IMO.

Use plenty of thread lock and if you get a tuned pipe stick a screw driver in the inlet end and rotate it around to make a lip around the edge of the pipe then slide the joining sleeve over that - stops it popping off. The HPI gear is really good they do plenty of bodies/wheels and tuning parts - I find it cheaper modifying the Impreza though!

wow.. no hole in the windscreen? are the rear windscreen vents enough? - mines got a nice 1.5" hole passenger side.
agree with the parts cost. Much cheaper than bits for my Big Scoob. New carbon clutch = £7.99 - if only the real bits were that price!

I had a Cen 206 WRC car, went in the shop one day for a couple of spares came out with a HoBoa 1/8 Pirate monster truck !! 4wd (optional into 2wd) carbon brakes, now with K&N & racing exhaust its class the cars are good on the flat stuff (tar or short grass) but this thing will drive through 3" of snow !!
