Question

Hi people, any one want to confirm once and for all the bhp, or ps of a STI TYPE R Ver.5

Some sites say 280ps and others say 300ps, there is also one that indicates that only the Ver.6 comes at 300ps.

Any suggestions??

Suburu are not allowed to sell a car with more than 280ps (276bhp)
on paper, an R34 Skyline is 'only' 280ps in japan also!
Hence why you would normaly find most of the above cars around the 290 mark in standard form.

Cheers! Hoping to get one soon, so 290 sounds pretty good to me.

If you haven't got the car yet, make sure you read all the good stuff written here about running octane boosters with our pump petrol, as these cars will only reliably produce these sorts of power outputs on Japanese specification fuel - or a close facsimile of it.

Also read up on KnockLinks if you haven't already done so. The sooner you have one of these in your car, the safer it'll be.

Yeh I've read up on getting as close to Jap spec fuel as possible, basically running Optimax + NF Octane booster.

If there has not been a knocklink fitted, how can you tell if damage has been done to the engine?

Also another thing is, how can you tell if the engine is a genuine STI ver.5, cos the Ver.5 has different cams etc. How do you know that it isn't a Ver.4 or 3 for that matter??

its a genuine 265-270BHP on UK fuel, anyone who thinks they are 300BHP are kidding themselves.

What do you mean? Even if the car comes with a KnockLink already fitted, you can't use it to tell if engine damage has already occurred. The KnockLink only gives you a real time indication of detonation, not a historical one.

If you drive the car hard without a KnockLink fitted, you have no practical way of telling whether the car is detting, so you're relying on good fuel and luck.

Also another thing is, how can you tell if the engine is a genuine STI ver.5, cos the Ver.5 has different cams etc.
To be absolutely 100% certain sure the internal components are what they should be, you'd need to strip the engine, which obviously isn't practical.

You can be pretty certain by making sure the VIN corresponds to a Version 5, that the VIN shown on the bulkhead matches the one on the suspension turret ID plate, and that the engine number on the ID plate matches that on the engine itself.

How do you know that it isn't a Ver.4 or 3 for that matter??
As mentioned above, you can cross-reference the numbers. However, it's a piece of p*ss to tell a V5 engine from the older ones just by looking at a couple of underbonnet pictures, as long as you know what to look for of course!

The only way to spot historic damage is to do an engine strip and/or use a camera down the plug holes.
Speaking of which, has anyone used a camera whilst the engine was in place? There isn't a lot of room to work with down the sides?

tell tale give away is that the ignition coil block is mounted on the right hand intake manifold runners on a version 5 whereas on a version 3/4 it is in the middle.

I have looked at 2 "sti 5"s recently, and both had version 4 engines in them!

Asurprisingly difficult job to accomplish since the verion 5 has stepper motor idle speed control and so the engine and chassis loom and ecu of a version 5 are not compatible with a version 4.

Yep indeedy. These two "V5's" you saw Adam, were they V5 bodyshells with V4 engines in them, or simply V4's with newer headlights, bumpers and rear spoiler?

Greasemonkey is Right in some respects.

I looked for a nicely uprated 5R and found a really good version 4 instead. So I sourced and fitted genuine front bumper/lights and rear spoiler. You couldnt tell, apart from the steering wheel and when you lift the bonnet and see the coil and dumpvalve pipes.

I doubt if I am the first and I wont be the last.
