my wrx is sick the check engine light comes on and i cant get above 4500 rpm what the fup is wrong people??

The car has gone into a "safe" mode because it isnt happy with something, for instance if the speedo goes knackered the car wont allow you to rev it beyond a certain amount. Not saying thats what wrong, you will have to put two wires together under the steering wheel to do a diagnostic check and get a check engine light code.
