Red face

I've had my STi8 since end of April and just today decided to redline it in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears. got a burning smell coming into the cabin after coming to a halt at the lights.

...is this from dumping the clutch or something?

ps. it felt good

Mixture of clutch and brakes, maybe.

because your only supposed to take it up to 7000rpm hitting the limiter is actually doing nothing apart from damage.

the power runs out at around 6500 rpm anyway so it would be best to get the next cog running around then, before the power tapers off.

the burning smell might be your clutch if you dumped it, if not i would think you have just fried the oil in the engine bay, have a check,

but to bounce the limiter through the gears is a no no mate

The whole point of the rev limiter is to prevent you damaging the engine. Does them good to be thrapped every so often
the smell is probably the brakes.

Clutch is favorite, mine stinks if you slip it a bit more than just a normal pull away.

It is the clutch. Mine stinks, the few times I have accidentally put in the red in first.

The clutch also smells in the same way if you are going on a gradient around 20 percent. For information, clutches are only tested up to 12 percent gradient usually.

If you are going on a gradient. I mean from standstill of course. Otherwise it just stalls. My clutch experts tells me if you do this every day it may need changing after just 20,000 miles - better to reverse a bit and use a "run way" but this is a different subject I realise.
