Check engine light help please

I have had my check engine light come on twice this weekend.The car is running perfectly,all fluids etc etc are spot on.
Can some one tell me how i check the fault code,should i stop driving it untill i have diagnosed the prob.

to check fault codes, just connect the two black connectors onder the dash on drivers side (just above the brake pedal i think). do this with the car turned off, then when connected, turn ignition two notches (the one before you start the car), and you should get a code flashing.
long flashes for the fist digit, then short for the second ;
i.e long,long,long,short = code 31.
do a search for fault codes and you should find them, if not post up your findings.
