Anyone know any decent web sites or agents in Japan?
I want to import a bug eye sti, and can deal with all procedures myself so am looking to get as cheap as poss direct from Japan.

Its a total minefield; keep away from any non-Japanese traders; some Australian and New Zealanders are OK. Make sure that you have access to a model report before you make a deal. Personally i would not entertain dealing with Sri Lankans or Arabs, at all; under any circumstanes. I have someone in mind, though I cant personally recommend them. Most people, including myself, wont tell you who their agent is; a good one is like gold dust. Email me if youre interested. Also I can tell you what the model that interests you has been selling in auction for.

I found a site listing recent auction examples. MY00 STi's tend to go for around 2.2 million yen, which is about £11,500 - £12,000 depending on exchange rate. Allow another £1500 for shipping, handling, registration and SVA plus another £3500 for VAT and import duty and you're looking at around £16,000 - £17,000 realistically to import a 2 year old car.

I found the prices here but haven't used them, just quite an interesting site.

Those prices are sh1te; sorry to spoil that. I havent looked but if I recall GCar dpecialise in Leg TT and VR4 wagons but theyre extremely overpriced; the 'auction data' is out of date and innacurate. Real auction price data is virtually impossible to find on the internet

Thought they were pricey! Any rough idea what a fully imported MY00 STi would be? Ball park figure would be OK

Here we go: the average price for a '00 GDB STI comes back as being 1,675,000 Yen. The current exchange rate is GB£ = Y182; thats quite low, Id expect it to go back to about Y190, which I will use... The average auction grade of the vehicles was 4.

Cost of the car:£8,815+
FOB & commission:£810+
Shipping:£500+
Port charges & Customs clearance:£166+
Import Duty:£1,010+
VAT:£1,949+

Landed cost:£13,250

On top of this you need to budget for an SVA test at the prevailing rate and a small number of parts; the principal expense will be in renting a 'model report' which will be required to import a vehicle manufactured after December 31st 1996.

So; thats what it costs, the trick is not to get bent over and f*cked up the ****.

Simon

Edited; but I cant make it line up!
