Turn it on and open the bonnet, you should hear a click or clunk as the compressor cuts in and out with a small change in engine note at the ECU accommodates for the change in engine load.

Sounds like an electrical problem, when ac is turned on an electomagnetic clutch is meant to pull in and turn the compressor, check your fuses ?

Sorry don't know, just going off previous experience with AC cars, don't get my first Impreza until monday.

You could locate the compressor and check to see if you are getting voltage then you would know if their is a signal getting through to run it.
