Help! First scoob purchase!
#1
need a little help guys... looking at some cars tomorrow and need a bit of advice.
Type RA '94 M. for £9K done 39,000km
two WRX's for £10K both 98 R done about 60,000km
and M/N reg wrx's also done ~60K miles for £7K-£8K
first of all , i'd be inclined to look more at the WRX's purely cos they're later cars, even though the RA hasn't been as far, its still 10 years old, and at 39,000km for a 10yr old car probably means most of it was probably done on the track.
so whilst im looking, what major faults are easily spotted? how do i tell a real dud from a decent motor? i know about the usual stuff, stone chips, worn drivers seats, worn pedals etc. but i dont know much about the scoobs mechanics.
I will get it inspected, but i want to weed out the crap ones so i dont wast inspection money on cars i could determine were crap by myself!
also are these prices about right, i dont want to barter, if they're already reasonably priced (although going for the full 1yr warranty is always a winner )
absolutely any help will be appreciated , because when i get in it i have a distinct feeling i'll i'll be chucking bundles of notes at the dealer.....
many thanks!

Based on what I see advertised in the For Sale section here.

These are at dealers, im willing to pay the extra, for not going private, so are they still overpriced for a dealer? Personally i think a 2K margin on a 9K car is a bit excessive IMO.
thanks!

Values aside; if these are all fresh imports the first thing that I would look at is the auction sheet. If the dealer has really sourced these vehicles himself, then he will have it; this will confirm the mileage and the auction grade, 39,000 klicks is not a particularly low mileage for the RA in my experience; if it had been used on a track it would almost certainly have a cage and a different seat fitted. If these cars are local to you then I'd get the ex-Bentley's techs at Subaru Service Centre to look at the one you fancy; they'll find most things wrong for an hours labour.

oops, sorry, just re-read last post, i didn't mean i would be happy to inflated prices from a dealer, just that , i dont mind paying more from a dealer, instead of going private. If the dealer is still asking silly money for older cars (like the type RA) i'll still walk away, even if its the best car i've ever seen I'd love a scoob, but not at a 2K premium!
I just dont seem to be able to find many scoobs around my price/age/mileage. £10K or less,98-00, preferably 40-50K miles
am i being unreasonable with those figures? or are the dealers i've seen (very few actually) just seriously overpricing?
cheers!

thanks STI, have just waded thru the entire for sale section. None of those take my fancy, i want a saloon, too not a chabwagon lol
at least i have a better idea of what I should be getting for my hard earned reddies! cheers!
i'll still go check out the ones i've booked test drives for tommorrow, and i'll keep my eye out on the 4sale section too.
thanks!

cars are only overpriced if you think negatively.
the current trend is to belittle imprezas publicly on this board and keep questiooning values and dealers and blah blah blah.
I for one am pleased to see values on the up, these cars, and a quick skeg through the a`trader show that cars hold sensible money everywhere else in the world except in the minds of good ol` fashioned ScoobyNetters.
Go look at these cars, look at a lot more besides and then make your mind up.
Then go and buy one and you will see what all the fuss is about

i don think its just a case of negative thinkin'. Cars can be overpriced due to a number of factors. Greed being one, in my case it lack of knowledge of a cars real-world worth. I've had a fresh import before, a nice celica gt4 turbo, never had any bother with it, hence why im quite happy to go for an imported scoob, so im not a total import virgin lol! Since i havent had a scoob before my knowledge as a buyer is very limited at the moment, im just trying to narrow down the chances of making any *costly* mistakes.
So far everyones been incredibly helpfull!
thanks all!

quick update... went for tst drive today
White WRX '98R with 39K miles on the clock. Looked tidy enough, drove well (although i wouldn't know what the hell i was looking for since it was the first one i drove !). Having compared the looks/style/ value of this one against the others i've seen , i managed to get a reasonable deal for my P/X and got a cat1 alarm/immob thrown in, so all in all it went pretty well
deposit paid, and subject to a satisfactory inspection, i'll be joining your club shortly lol
woohoo!
once again, thanks for the advice guys.
