MY03 WRX - Engine problems !!
#1
I've been out in it today (MY03 WRX - 2500 miles) after not driving it for a week or so.
It seems to idle ok but not so smooth, a bit lumpy !!
Also
When reving her up whilst staionary it seems to missfire at about 2500RPM, as if shes running on 3 3/4 cylinders.
Its just doesn't seem as smooth a runner as she was.
Any ideas as to what could be the problem ?
Also I may be paranoid but it does sound a bit tappety (spelling), top end noisey !!
Thanks

Get to the dealer ASAP - and dont boot it until you get there....
Fuel alone won't make it misfire like that... unless you put diesal in
Jza
Edited to say lumpy idle could be MAF failure.. and if it is you risk blowing your engine if you use boost...

Wife has just returned from the dealers. Very helpful and they took a look at the car there and then.
They say all is fine, they have test driven it and had the diagnostic system plugged in - no ecu errors reported.
They seem to think that what I experience at 2000-2500rpm is not missfire but the point at which the turbo spools, generates boost, the wastegate opens/closes etc which causes the engine to feel 'not smooth' at this point.
They didn't comment about the top end tappety noise, so this must be ok.
Comments please.

Does not sound convincing.
1) your idle should really be rock solid.
2) as said, a MAF can gradually fail without producing any ECU fault codes
3) when you rev it whilst stationary, you will never produce boost (the engine needs to see "load" for that, so that explanation is iffy at best
My best bet would be to go to a shop that knows how to use DeltaDash (Scoobysport, Power Engineering, etc etc) depending on who is closest to you. They can put your mind at ease or indeed detect potential problems. Don't drive the car too hard unless you have done this.

MAF failure - commonist fault is a lumpy idle. Mine starts at about 1200 (after breaking and putting in clutch).. then immediately drops to 600rpm - and stays there (the only time it changes is when the cooling fan cuts in). If yours goes up and down it would suggest somethings up
