Maybe not as clear as you'd first think.
The model year refers to Subaru's official manufacture policy, so, for example, you could buy an MY01 car in 2000, and there were definitely a fair few 01's still being registered in 2002...

If it was registered before Oct '01, it's guaranteed to be an MY01. The nearer the end of the year you get, the more likely it is to be an '02, but the only way to be certain is to crosscheck the VIN.
