Email from Millers - Ref Octane booster.
#1
I have been reading some threads on Scoobynet about the actual RON increase using Millers octane booster which I now use. I was concerned about any det damage to my Type-R, so I emailed the company. For anybody concerned it clears up any confusion about the product. What follows is my email to the company and their (very brief) response.
My Email:
Hello,
Could you please clarify a query I have ref Millers Octane Plus. The product says it will increase the octane rating of a fuel by two points. I was informed that each RON value is made up of 10 octane points. I was told that this means that the actual increase would only be 0.2 RON increase per 250ml bottle.
I know there is confusion on this matter on the Scoobynet website and I wish to clear this up as I own a Impreza Type-R which is designed to run on 100 RON rated fuel.
My question is, if I were to use a fuel of 98 RON and I added one 250ml bottle of Octane Plus, would the octane rating then be 98.2 RON or 100 RON?
Any help to clear this up would be appreciated.
Craig Finney.
Millers response:
Octane plus will take you close to 100 RON not 98.2. Incidentally I have been speaking to Shell recently who tell me 98 is the MINIMUM it could leave the refinery, could be as high as 98.6
Regards - Martyn Mann
Cheers,
Craig.

hmmm it does not give a proper responce to the question tho
i mean u could class 98 as close to 100 couldnt you, seams to be avoiding the question while still sounding pleasant,
if say for instance u get a fresh batch of optimax and its rated at 98.6 ron and u bang sumthing in that gives 2 ron points there your talking nigh on 99 ron fuel, which is also close to 100

StickyMicky,
It depends on how you interpret his response.
I was trying to be very specific with the wording of my question, so as to leave no room for ambiguity.
The first part of their response, I think answers my query.
I can only go on what they say. I don't think I could have made myself any more clearer than I did, so I would hope they are not deliberatly deceiving us.
Cheers,
Craig.

I deliberately didn't specify a fuel as I was only interested in figures. I only quoted 98 RON to see what their reply was.
I always thought that Optimax was 98.6 RON from the start, I didn't realise that it was only a minimum of 98 RON.

yeah it can go as low as 98 if its been in storage for a longish time, small petrol stations with a low turnaround can give u a lower rating fuel
from memory octane booster gives better gains on lower octane fuels?
so you would see a bigger gain on 95 ron fuel with the same treatment, or have i remberd that totaly wrong

We add a bottle to each fill for both cars. Legacy twin turbo and Forester S/TB. Neither gives any indication of detting with Millers added, the Legacy will occasionally without any.

Craig,
The octane rating will vary according to the amount of fuel that
you add the 250ml OB to, it may have been better to have been
specific with the amount e.g. "If i add 250ml of Miller's Octane
Plus to 50ltrs of 98 Ron fuel, what would be the resulting octane rating?" to get a straight answer from him, but then again he
still might still give you a vague answer!
Cheers,
Derek..

Derek,
I was working on the assumption that the label says it will treat 50 litres. I would hope that their answer refers to that 50 litres.
I hope my Knocklink hurries up and gets here!!!

hey if it works in your car then use it
£2 per tank isnt so bad for a shot of decent fuel
but from knowing that nf does increase the ron to 100 by adding about 50ml to a tank, i can definatly feel a lot more punch coming from the engine with NF over the millers stuff i tried

I use NF in my P1, I put 1ml per litre of Optimax in (50ml per 50Ltr) is this enough for normal day to day running or should I use more? I don't have a Knocklink yet but don't hear any det.

A very good article including testing several octane boosters can be found at:
http://www.gtatech.com/news_au_articl.html
A snippet that may be of interest is:
"For this test we tracked down nine different makes and models of octane boosters, two fuel "additive," a straight race fuel and a drum of Toluene. Where there were several different "levels" of octane boosters in the one brand, we chose the strongest version.
The biggest claims the bottles have is the amount of "points" they claim to increase. This is ambiguous as a "point" can relate to either 1.0 RON (Research Octane Number) octane points, or 0.1RON octane points."

The millers website has a .pdf you can download with the octane results on.... basically the results are:
Optimax with Octance plus = 99.4 RON
Optimax with CVL = 100.8 RON
So if Optimax is considered 98.6 then the octane plus increases the RON by 0.8. Not sure how they can claim 2 RON on their website but also have a document on the same website that gives the results above .
Either way i've used Millers and NF and must say the car felt better with NF (race) but the Millers was more convenient. Incidentily i didn't find the NF one shot to be as good as the race (1ml/litre)? Im currently just using Optimax on it's own at the moment.
