Well, I have a pretty straight forward set of requirements & there doesn't seem to be a lot of choice ....my next car must be quicker than either my current UK Turbo & previous 300 bhp Cossie . At the same time it must be practical, carrying family round at 'pootling' speed without breaking down (A la TVR!)& it must be new (owned too many dodgy heaps - see cossie reference above to risk 2nd hand )& max price of 27K.
Only interesting cars in that price bracket pace wise seem to be the VX220 Turbo (Not enough seats or doors) or the Evo 8 which is the std version. So Uk Sti 8 with PPP it is based on improved looks over last model & all round ability....or have I missed a practical performance bargain somewhere along the line?

Don't want to put anyone off a Scoob, but what is the price of a Volvo S4 in the UK? v.v.v nice motor vehicle. More practical than a modded Scooby, great residuals, dare I say better reliability and possibly lower insurance due to the lack of baseball cap wearing high risk owners.

Volvo does come with pipe and slippers as standard though for the more discerning owner.

Nah, pipe and slippers are an option, in a similar manner to Subaru offering:
Reliability
Decent clutch
Decent gearbox
Decent gearchange
Decent interior
Decent paint quality
Decent looks
A semblance of after-sales service (from what I have read re UK dealers)

All as optional extras

I knew all that and I still bought one!!!

Looks like you bought a lemon Neil as I have none of those faults other than the poor chip prone paint.

Volvo S40 - Nice Residuals - In the same sentence? Ha ha ha HA HA! Don't forget that's a ten year old cavalier underneath.

Hope it works out for you

There's always a Focus RS - and money left over after the buy to go for some mods that'll help ya reach that 300bhp figure!

I believe they've got one in Congleton with 300!

Thumbs down

Right, kick in the b*****ks time. Was dead set on staying with scoobies, BUT.....reading an Evo 8 v Sti 8 magazine article last night they had the PPP'd Subaru at 5.5 0-60 (that can't be right!)& generally slaughtered by the Evo (please tell me that can't be right surely!!). So off to the Mitsi dealer to suss it out. Nice car, not as obvious as the Evo 6 but still prefer the look of the latest Sti but would put up with fugly evo if it goes so much better. Decided at this point to check insurance, . Current insurer flatly refuses to entertain either!!! Nothing to do with my age or record etc just that they are too big a risk.
So, 2 more questions! If I stay Scooby will I get embarassed by all Evo 8's & who will insure em?

Flame suit ready

The MY03STiType UK Versus a EVO8 which I believe JDM you would expect the EVO to win

You may get a closer comparision of handling and performance with a non UK models, such as MY03STi JDM with twin scrool & DccD or a MY03 Type 'C'lightwieght which are both of a simular price to a MYSTIUK

IMHO

Depending how they did it you may find the 0-60 used 3 gears. If its anything like my RA then unless you go into the red zone you cant get 60 in 2nd gear. Mind due 0-70 is pretty quick . 0-60 is not the be all and end all and disregarded and just used to sell the cars , now 0-100 gives a better impression and definitely even better 30-70 as a guide on how tractable the car is and how well it will do in a TED test.

still if i had 27k it would be spent on 2nd hand un i mean the amount of depreciation you would tak just from driving off forecourt would make for a healthy rebuild + tweaks Hmm i think i'd go GTR R33 with over 500 bhp for that

scooby_si, In total agreement except every dodgy car dealer in the universe has binoculars trained on my front door so they see me coming before I set off! If it's crashed, bashed or a Friday Afternoon Lemon then I'll be a cert to buy it! Therefore new it has to be. (Considered a demo but aren't they 100% nailed on to be thrashed).
Btw, the 0-100 time was no contest either!
On a more pleasing note just got a Tesco's quote @1700 quid, so not quite so fed up now.

For insurance, try:

www.confused.com

...enter your details, give it an hour, then check your mail. I was pleasantly suprised with a quote for an MY03 STi Type-UK for
£656 fully comp (no kidding!).

Nog, I'd check again. The lower quotes that come thru seem to be for a GX!!!!!(Regardless of what you ask for).
Tried Liv Vic & got a PROPER quote under 1100 so well happy.
Test Drives sorted so we shall see............................

As you have a family, check the NCAP tests for the 2 cars.

That might sway your decision a little.

But just to let you know, someone told me last night that the Evo got half a star for its crash tests!!!!

New Age Impreza got 4 I think.

For anyone that's interested (that'll be no one then)... here's the response from Confused.Com:

It appears that the broker sites that we visit for quotations have
returned quotes on the incorrect vehicle for us. If you look at
the direct Insurance companies, they have quoted on the correct
vehicle.

This error has resulted due to a technical problem between the two
sites which we are now looking into. In the meantime, if you wish
to be re quoted by the broker sites on the correct vehicle we
recommend that you call them on their help line number.

They will be able to illustrate any changes in premium for you.

Volvo T4 isn't in same league as Sti - but they are OK. Certainly a better bet on motorway trips but crap round corners.
I went from a standard UK turbo to a T4 - in a straight line there wasn't much in it. Once the T4 was modded (filter, de-cat, chip, etc) it would have left the standard scooby for dead (if you could keep it on the road - ridiculous torque steer).
Moved to Sti Version III now which is in a different league again.
Still - don't knock 'em - they may be a bit 'pipe and slippers' but they are not that slow! Check this out -http://www.vptuning.com/membercars/40/tim/
