My down pipe is getting fitted today and the garage think its OK to do it without fitting the lambda sensor because there are no CATS on the car is this true ?

What make model & year is your car

Definately NO! The ECU uses the lambda sensor for closed loop fueling (i.e at idle and cruise). If the garage is saying this i'd rather not use them to be honest as they clearly no nothing about the Impreza.

Tony is right, the Lambda sensor is essential to the ECU fuel control. The difference between my car being very far out on the MOT and passing was a new Lambda sensor. The car runs much better now too.

Sounds like a con by those garage mechanics to me.

did the earlier cars have two lambda sensors? If so then could the second one be discarded? This is just me thinking out loud from things I think I've previously read on here.

Just rung the garage and they decided to put it on any way because
the cat will have to go on for the MOT. I am absolutely gutted now that I diddn't let jap innovations do my car but at the time waiting untill the 21st of the month seemed too long so I let my local truck fitters do it.

If you have an older impreza (up to 97 IIRC) then the lambda sensor isn't in the downpipe, its in the headers. If this is the case then the sensor they are talking about in the downpipe is a temp sensor for the cat, which you now do not need.

If your lambda sensor is in the down pipe, this has to be put in the new downpipe, for reasons mentioned earlier. There should also be the cat temp sensor too, as before you need not put that in - infact I don't even think there is a place for it on the decat pipes.

Jay m a That might explain it all then as mine is a 96 car so it will be a temp sensor . I initially thaught it was a temp sensor but got told other wise.

The lambda sensor is in the down pipe of my UK MY96. There is nothing in the headers - I checked.

IIRC, the change over happened between MY95 and MY96, just to be confusing.

I knew it was around that time! not 100% sure hence the IIRC

As long as you've still got your lambda sensor, thats the main thing.

dnb is your sensor in the downpipe right near the top and over to one side facing the intercooler or a little further down facing towards the back of the car ?

I'm sure it's facing the IC - so it's between the cat and the turbo. Will check when I do the oil change in the next day or so.

There's nothing in the exhaust header on my car anyway...

the sensor behind the cat is the'cat on fire' sensor and can be discarded
if you had a sensor before the cat it must be replaced, easily checked, have a look at your old d/p if theres a hole before the cat that was for the lambda.
mine needed blanking off as its a 95 and it does point toward the i/c

The one at the top of the downpipe facing the IC is the Lambda sensor. The temp sensor goes at the bottom of the downpipe near the bend. The holes have got different thread sizes.

Picked the car up from garage they fitted the exhaust with the sensor but broke the headunit and I now have white smoke coming out of the heat shield for the turbo.

P bird and sons

Have used them for my familys cars for years mainly becuase they are very close I know the people there and when they do **** up I can go in and bitch get money off etc. They put new syncros in my peugeot gear box for £270 including VAT becuase they made a mistake and quoted me 270 inc VAT instead of plus VAT. peugeot btw quoted 550 + VAT. They are good for simple things and collecting the car dropping off as needed but I think when the scooby turned up all the mechanics stood around it scratching there heads and seemed to think I was bringing it in to cure a missfire (scooby sport BB and they thaught it was broken becuase of the sweet boxer sound)

From now on specialists only.

just to help clarify abit,
om my 96MY Type RA, i bought a H/S d.p, the lamda sensor was in one of the headers.
On the new d.p, i simply tucked the heat sensor out of the way as the new d.p had no boss for it.
The new d.p was also made to fit later cars and so had a boss for lamda sensor up by the turbo, this was blanked off with a plug and job done!
